Martin Short cancels comedy shows with Steve Martin following the sudden death of his daughter Katherine

I’m absolutely heartbroken. I was SO looking forward to seeing Martin and Steve together again, but now their shows are postponed. It’s just… devastating. I just found out Martin’s beautiful daughter, Katherine, tragically took her own life, and honestly, a comedy show is the last thing on anyone’s mind right now. My heart goes out to him and his family. I can’t even imagine the pain.

Steve Martin, 80, and Martin Short, 75, who star together in the show ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ were scheduled to perform their comedy show, ‘The Best of Steve Martin and Martin Short,’ this weekend in Milwaukee and Minneapolis.

However, both venues announced on Tuesday that the shows have been postponed.

Pabst Theater Group announced that the Steve Martin and Martin Short show planned for February 27th in Milwaukee has been postponed due to unexpected issues.

We’ll be rescheduling the event, and your tickets will be valid for the new date. We’ll share more details as soon as we have them.

Short and Martin have also rescheduled their October 10th show at The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri.

They also have concerts planned for March, April, and September, and as of now, those haven’t been canceled or rescheduled.

Katherine’s death at the age of 42 was announced on Tuesday.

Representatives for Short confirmed the devastating news in a statement to the Daily Mail.

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Katherine Hartley Short. Her family is heartbroken and asks for privacy as they grieve. Katherine was a cherished person who brought happiness to everyone she knew and will be greatly missed.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m hearing reports about emergency services being called to a certain location around 6:41 p.m. last night. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed they were there, but understandably, they’re respecting the individual’s privacy and aren’t releasing any names or details right now. It’s a good reminder that everyone deserves their privacy, even during difficult times.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m deeply saddened to share that Katherine was discovered at her home following what authorities are calling a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Details are still emerging, but it appears she tragically passed away at her residence.

As a lifestyle expert who often hears about these situations, I was told by the dispatcher that the person who called it in was actually with the individual needing help, but couldn’t get into the bedroom where they were located at the home in Hollywood, California. It’s a really strange detail, and highlights how critical it is to provide clear information in an emergency.

In 2023, Katherine was last seen in public with her father at a 40th birthday celebration held at Grand Master Recorders. Guests included Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, Catherine O’Hara, Bo Welch, and Joni Mitchell.

Katherine was a licensed clinical social worker who earned her master’s degree from the University of Southern California.

My heart goes out to families built through adoption, and I’ve always admired Short’s dedication to his. He and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, lovingly welcomed Katherine and her brothers, Oliver and Henry, into their family. It was a huge loss when Nancy passed away in 2010 after a courageous fight with ovarian cancer, but I know her love continues to surround them.

The couple had been married for 30 years at the time of her death.

After Nancy Dolman died, Steve Martin, who worked with her in comedy for many years, honored her with a song called “The Great Remember (For Nancy)” on one of his albums.

In 2019, Short fondly remembered his marriage to Nancy, calling it a great success. He shared that he often feels connected to her even after her passing, saying he still talks to her and senses her presence nearby.

He told AARP magazine that experiencing true hardship can make you braver. He described it as finding a silver lining – a positive side to difficult times.

He also previously told CBC his attitude to grief is: ‘We go on.’

In his 2014 memoir, he wrote that Nancy’s death was the most devastating experience of his life.

While helping his children cope with their mother’s death, Short relied on his own past experiences to guide him.

The night before Nancy passed away, she spoke to her youngest son, Henry, and told him, ‘This experience will make you stronger and more determined.’

Fourteen years after the loss of his wife, Nancy, actor James Short and his children are still grieving. He has shared the quote by George Eliot that brings him comfort when he remembers her.

He explained to the Hollywood Reporter that people who have passed away live on in our memories as long as we remember them. He shared that he and his wife, Nancy, were together for 36 years, and he simply didn’t want to lose the memory of her.
