A key villain from the Disney+ series Ahsoka is appearing in Maul: Shadow Lord, an upcoming Star Wars animated project set for release in 2026. It’s common for characters to move between different Star Wars stories, as the franchise generally tells a single, ongoing narrative. However, this particular appearance was a surprise for fans, as the villain’s involvement in Maul: Shadow Lord wasn’t previously announced.
Disney+ and Star Wars have released the first trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord, a new animated series focusing on the adventures of Sam Witwer’s Darth Maul between Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. The trailer showed plenty of Maul, along with other characters, and importantly featured Marrok, a character fans will recognize from Season 1 of Ahsoka.

Okay, so around the 1 minute and 20 second mark of the trailer, things really get interesting. Marrok actually ignites his lightsaber and confronts Maul, and we get this intense standoff. They even start dueling – a proper lightsaber fight! – but just as it’s getting good, the trailer cuts away. It’s a frustrating tease, honestly, but it definitely sets up a compelling conflict.

During Marrok’s screen time, a voice said, “The Emperor wants you dead.” It’s not certain who spoke the line – whether it was Marrok himself or someone else. However, because the voice was deep and gravelly, similar to Marrok’s voice in Ahsoka, it’s likely Marrok delivered the threat.

As a huge fan, I was really excited to see Marrok appear in the new footage! We didn’t get a clear look at how big his role will be, but just the fact that he’s back is a big deal. He was a major presence in Ahsoka, and while Ahsoka defeated him, there was that strange green smoke when he went down. It definitely hinted that he wasn’t truly gone, and I’m eager to see where they take that storyline.
The smoke probably indicated that the original Marrok had died previously and was brought back to life by Morgan Elsbeth or another witch from Dathomir. This would have essentially turned him into something like a zombie, which could explain his lack of speech.
Marrok also had a quick appearance in Tales of the Empire, but it was just a small cameo and didn’t affect the main story.
The new series, Maul: Shadow Lord, will debut on Disney+ on April 6, 2026. You can watch the official trailer below.
What Will Marrok’s Role Be in Maul: Shadow Lord?

Given that Marrok was an Inquisitor and appeared to tell Maul the Emperor ordered his death, it’s likely he’ll be tasked with tracking down and eliminating Maul in the Maul: Shadow Lord story.
Marrok appearing in Maul isn’t the biggest deal – cameos and special appearances happen frequently in Star Wars series. What’s exciting is the trailer’s confirmation that Marrok and Maul will actually fight each other during the show.
There’s a good chance Maul will defeat and kill Marrok in their fight. If that happens, it would prove that Marrok in Ahsoka was just a reanimated body, not a truly living being.
If Marrok is killed, Morgan Elsbeth might reappear briefly. This could involve her using Nightsister magic to bring him back to life, reinforcing the idea that he was always under her control in Ahsoka.
