MAFS’ Joel breaks his silence on his wild wedding speech and sexuality rumours – as he makes shock admission about his bride Juliette and declares war on Gia

Joel Moses, a newcomer to Married At First Sight, has finally spoken out about the awkwardness surrounding his wedding to Juliette Fava, and he stands by everything he said and did, refusing to apologize.

The 31-year-old groom told the Daily Mail he doesn’t regret making a lot of jokes in his wedding vows and speech, even though some co-workers and fans have criticized him and called him arrogant.

In fact, Joel was relieved after watching the episode back.

‘I was a bit concerned watching my wedding back,’ he admitted.

I mainly remembered the key scenes, but the details had faded. Watching it again felt like seeing it with fresh eyes. Overall, I felt good about how the screening went and was pleased with the final result.

Joel, who recently married Juliette, the receptionist, in a particularly uncomfortable wedding, explained that his exaggerated jokes were intentional.

‘It’s a fake wedding. Who cares about the speeches?’ he said bluntly.

It feels like everyone always does things the same old way, without any originality. Why don’t we just relax and enjoy ourselves?

‘Why does it have to be 90 per cent serious and 10 per cent funny? Why can’t it be the opposite?’

While some viewers felt he overdid it, Joel claimed the edit removed the softer side of his speech.

Honestly, they totally butchered all the good, emotional parts, you know? But I don’t even care! I was laughing so hard the whole time – it was perfect, exactly how it should be. I wouldn’t change a single thing!

The groom, known for his outgoing personality, also spoke about rumors questioning why he was on the show, making it clear he wasn’t seeking celebrity status.

He admitted he’d been withdrawing from the world, scared of attracting attention or speaking his mind.

Joel said appearing on Married at First Sight felt like the culmination of his personal growth, and he believed it was meant to be.

He described a feeling of instant connection during his first casting call. ‘It felt like magic,’ he said, ‘and I knew immediately that this role was meant for me if I really wanted it.’

Although there’s been online talk and guessing about his personal life, Joel directly addressed questions about his sexuality and made his position clear.

I’ve known about his style since he was just a kid – even at twelve, he always had a flair for dressing well, he was really flamboyant. But he’s always been clear about one thing: he’s always been attracted to women, and that’s just who he is.

‘I am a mama’s boy, that’s true. And mama’s born proud.’

Joel clarified that the recent, widely shared wedding speech given by his mother wasn’t connected to their work on the project, despite it attracting a lot of attention.

Okay, so everyone’s been asking about my mom’s speech, and I finally got some answers! Apparently, she wrote the whole thing herself – every single word! The people in charge just gave it the thumbs up. Honestly, I didn’t even get a sneak peek before she delivered it, which is killing me, because I’m so proud of her and I wanted to be prepared! But it was all her, her brilliance, and they just let her shine. It’s amazing!

If anything, Joel said he has been widely misjudged.

‘People judged and got it wrong, as they normally do with me,’ he said.

‘Humans are like layers. The first layer can be deceiving.’

Although Joel believed viewers didn’t understand him, he explained that the actual problems began almost immediately after the wedding ceremony.

During the vows, he said he felt there was genuine chemistry and banter between him and Juliette.

However, he claimed the mood shifted dramatically by the end of the reception.

Oh my god, you would NOT believe what happened at the wedding! Towards the end, she just lost it. She started glaring at my mom, seriously, the most terrifying, icy stares I’ve ever seen. It was honestly bone-chilling, I was so worried!

‘That’s giving supervillain vibes.’

After the wedding ceremony, things reportedly became strained in the car when Juliette questioned him about what he said in his speeches.

‘If you misunderstand me that much, it really throws me off,’ he said.

‘A wise woman would see through the humour and see the true person underneath that.’

Joel also hit back at Juliette’s suggestion that he may be on the show for the wrong reasons.

He explained that he’s always kept a private life, never seeking attention through social media or television. He prefers to live simply and out of the spotlight.

‘I think celebrities are twats, to be honest. I don’t want to be famous.’

But it’s not just his bride he’s bracing for a battle with.

Joel shared that he anticipated conflict with two of the participants from the start, and he’s already considering eliminating one of them.

I checked who was in the show and immediately noticed two people I thought would cause problems. I texted my mom, warning her, ‘Those two are going to be trouble.’ Those two were Gia and Bec, as it turned out.

He added at the wedding it was ’90 per cent Gia’ coming for him.

‘Gia didn’t like me from the first moment she laid eyes on me,’ he said.

She mistakenly believes the show’s name is ‘Gia at First Sight,’ and constantly steers conversations back to herself, even when they aren’t about her.

Heading into the dinner party, Joel is expecting ‘nuclear war’.

‘I thought it was gonna go off between me and Gia,’ he said.

I expected to be heavily criticized by everyone present, but surprisingly, I managed to avoid much attention.

He acknowledged he made a mistake at the wedding by not greeting Juliette’s family well when they were at the altar.

You know, looking back, I really wish I’d properly introduced myself to her parents with a handshake. Instead, I did this awkward little wave – honestly, I have no idea what came over me! It just felt so strange in the moment, but a firm handshake is always the way to go when meeting parents for the first time. It’s all about making a good first impression, and I definitely fumbled that one!

‘After the reception I had a lovely chat with them.’

Married At First Sight continues Wednesday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine.
