After initial marketing efforts didn’t quite excite fans, Lucasfilm recently released a trailer that many are calling a significant improvement. This new trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu offers a better look at the action, villains, and creatures we can expect in the movie – the first Star Wars film in seven years.

The recent preview of The Mandalorian and Grogu answered a big question fans were asking: would we finally see Pedro Pascal’s face? Pascal has become a well-known actor since The Mandalorian first aired, appearing in popular franchises like Marvel and The Last of Us. Disney highlighting this was a smart move to generate excitement. However, revealing his face introduces complications within the established Star Wars lore, creating some narrative challenges. Fortunately, the upcoming Star Wars film offers a chance to resolve these issues.

Din Djarin’s Helmet Rule Holds Back His Character Development

Season 1 of The Mandalorian introduced a strict rule for the main character, Din Djarin: he was never allowed to take off his helmet. This created an air of mystery around him, similar to the original portrayal of Boba Fett before his backstory was explored in the prequel films. Over the course of the first season, the show slowly revealed more about Din Djarin, culminating in a brief glimpse of his face in the finale. Season 2 then explained that Din Djarin belonged to a specific Mandalorian group called the Children of the Watch, who followed a much stricter code than the Mandalorians seen in The Clone Wars, who commonly removed their helmets.

Initially, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni established a logical reason for Din Djarin’s strict helmet rule in The Mandalorian. However, it’s now creating issues for his character. Din Djarin shows his face twice more in Season 2, including a particularly moving scene in the finale. Then, in Season 3, he unexpectedly reverts to the beliefs he held in Season 1. It would have been a significant step forward for Din Djarin’s development if he had become more flexible in his beliefs after Season 2, especially after encountering other Mandalorians.

One key reason Din Djarin keeps his helmet on is due to the actor’s availability – he mostly provides the voice for the character. This approach is similar to how Darth Vader was often portrayed, but while it’s a cool connection to Star Wars history, it does create some issues with the story’s direction.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Movie Can Finally Fix Din Djarin’s Flaw

The way Din Djarin is presented as an action figure gives the show’s creators a lot of freedom. It allows them to continue his story for a long time, and the use of a masked character, puppets, and aliens keeps the focus on the adventure rather than one actor. However, it’s still unknown how much screen time Pedro Pascal will have in the future, and because he removed his helmet in front of the Hutt Twins, he’s technically broken the Mandalorian code again.

Rather than repeating a storyline from Season 3, the show could allow Din Djarin to decide he doesn’t have to strictly adhere to the Mandalorian rules anymore. This change in perspective might happen after he defeats the dragonsake without his helmet, especially with Grogu learning the ways of the Mandalorians. Seeing Din Djarin without his helmet more often would be a positive development for both the story and his character. If The Mandalorian and Grogu does well, it could eventually move beyond Disney+ and potentially lead to Pedro Pascal being able to play the role more often in theatrical films.
