James Gunn’s first DC movie didn’t perform as well domestically as the latest film starring his frequent collaborator, Margot Robbie.
Emerald Fennell’s new film, Wuthering Heights, starring Robbie and Jacob Elordi, opened in theaters on February 13th and has already become a box office success. As of February 24th, it has earned nearly $61 million ($60,982,788) domestically, according to data from The Numbers. This puts it ahead of the $55.8 million earned by 2021’s The Suicide Squad.
Worldwide, The Suicide Squad has made $168.7 million, but Wuthering Heights is close behind with $156.9 million and is expected to surpass it soon. Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad, a role she previously played in the 2016 Suicide Squad and the 2020 film Birds of Prey.
Fennell’s version of Wuthering Heights has sparked a lot of debate. The adaptation significantly simplifies Emily Brontë’s original story, prioritizing the love story between Cathy and Heathcliff. A major point of contention has been the casting of Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, as many readers believe the character was intended to be a person of color in the novel.
Robbie’s latest film, Wuthering Heights, is proving to be a hit after a disappointing performance in her previous movie, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (released in 2025), following the success of 2023’s Barbie. With a budget of $80 million, Wuthering Heights is expected to be commercially successful, as a general rule, movies need to earn 2.5 times their production cost to recoup their investment.
