Taron Egerton likely won’t be the next James Bond, and he surprised fans with a dramatic new appearance on Sunday.
The British actor, famous for playing the young spy in the Kingsman movies, was a strong candidate for the part.
Despite speculation, 36-year-old actor Egerton doesn’t think he’ll be the next James Bond, following Daniel Craig. He shared this while attending the Tropfest film festival in Sydney on Sunday.
You know, I was chatting with a celebrity recently on the red carpet, and they were surprisingly candid about the possibility of playing James Bond. They confessed it just never felt like a role that suited them, and they honestly didn’t see themselves in that iconic part. It’s refreshing to hear someone be so upfront about what feels authentic to them, isn’t it? Sometimes, even the most coveted roles just aren’t the right fit, and that’s perfectly okay!
There are many strong contenders, and it’s clearly a major part of film history – I definitely don’t want to downplay its importance.
‘I just feel that my path is less kind of grand and idealised.’

Fans applauded the actor’s down-to-earth response after it was shared online, though many were also distracted by his fresh, short haircut.
On X, some people mistakenly believed his recent appearance – reportedly for his upcoming comedy film, Everybody Wants to Fck Me* – indicated he was losing his hair.
After seeing the British actor on the red carpet in Australia, one person commented online, jokingly saying they thought he used to have more hair.
A second joked: ‘A Connery toupee wouldn’t help.’
While a third added: ‘Fair, also his balding would be an issue.’
Many people reacted positively, with one commenter saying Taron was being modest, but they were confident he would be amazing. They called it a sign of his humility and grace.
Someone else commented that Taron’s decision to pursue other roles demonstrates a strong sense of self-awareness, and it’s not necessarily a good fit for every actor to play James Bond.
One person explained his new look, saying he shaved his head for an upcoming movie role.
Last year, Egerton said he didn’t think he’d be a good fit for the role of James Bond, believing he’s simply too unpolished for the sophisticated character.
I’ve always been a huge James Bond fan, especially what Daniel Craig brought to the role. But honestly, when asked about potentially taking it on myself, I just didn’t think I’d be right for it. I’m a bit of a mess, and I just don’t see myself fitting that polished, sophisticated mold. It’s a dream role, but I think someone else would be a much better fit.
Honestly, I’ve always felt like this role deserves a fresh face – someone younger and really exciting. I’d probably just get in the way of a newer actor truly shining, so I think it’s best if they go with someone else.
Although the next James Bond hasn’t been revealed, director Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune, will be directing the upcoming film.
The filmmaker, who is from French Canada, will also be an executive producer on the project, working with Tanya Lapointe.
Amazon has chosen Amy Pascal and David Heyman to produce the new James Bond film, following a change in producers from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who had overseen the franchise for many years.
Okay, so, like, I’m STILL freaking out! The streaming service I’m obsessed with totally bought MGM – yes, the MGM! And do you know what that means?! JAMES BOND! They own James Bond now! It cost them $8.5 billion, which is insane, but SO worth it. I can’t even begin to imagine all the 007 content we’re going to get now. It’s a dream come true, honestly.
They gained complete creative freedom over the James Bond films through an agreement with Barbara and Michael Broccoli, the children of the original Bond producer, Albert R. Broccoli.
As a huge fan, I was thrilled to hear that Amazon finally made a deal with Barbara and Michael back in March 2025! While the exact amount hasn’t been made public, everyone’s saying it was well over a billion dollars – a truly fantastic outcome for them and a great move for Amazon, in my opinion.
Barbara and Michael took over the franchise in 1995 when their father passed on control of his company, Eon Productions, to them.
