The reveal of The Timeless Child in 2020 felt like a major rewrite of Doctor Who’s history. It turned out the Doctor wasn’t originally from this universe, but was adopted by someone from Gallifrey and then played a key role in creating the Time Lords by changing their genetic makeup. This was a hugely controversial change to the show’s established story – arguably the biggest since Doctor Who first aired in 1963 – and was largely driven by showrunner Chris Chibnall.
Even early on, the show hinted at a hidden history for the Doctor. During the Seventh Doctor’s adventures, Doctor Who began subtly suggesting the character had a mysterious past. Although the show was cancelled before these ideas could be fully explored, the reveal of the Timeless Child now gives those earlier hints a new significance. Before that, the story “The Brain of Morbius” briefly showed glimpses of Doctors who weren’t William Hartnell, suggesting the Doctor had regenerated many times before him.
Even in more recent shows, these subtle clues have popped up. A good example is the episode “The Girl in the Fireplace” from the second season of Doctor Who, written by Steven Moffat.
Did Madame de Pompadour See The Doctor’s Timeless Child Years In Doctor Who Season 2?
Many fans consider “The Girl in the Fireplace” to be one of the best episodes of Doctor Who, especially during David Tennant’s time as the Tenth Doctor alongside Rose Tyler. Before his romance with Rose, the Doctor attracted the attention of Madame de Pompadour while visiting 18th-century France.
To discover why robots from the future were following Madame de Pompadour through time, the Doctor delved into her thoughts and memories, similar to a mind meld. Unexpectedly, Madame de Pompadour was also able to access the Doctor’s mind. She sensed his deep loneliness and vast knowledge of space, and playfully asked, “Doctor who? It’s more than just a secret, isn’t it?”
This moment in Doctor Who is unusual for the era before Chris Chibnall took over, as it hinted that hidden parts of the Doctor’s history were connected to larger events in the universe.
What Was Madame de Pompadour Really Referring To?
Given that Steven Moffat wrote “The Girl in the Fireplace,” it’s possible Madame de Pompadour’s question – “Doctor who?” – foreshadowed the events surrounding Trenzalore. This question could be the key to restoring Gallifrey after its destruction in the Time War.
As much as I love the Tenth Doctor, I always figured any real understanding of Gallifrey’s return wouldn’t just be floating around in his head. Sure, maybe through the War Doctor, Ten had a little inkling it had survived, but it was Eleven who actually figured out how to bring it back. His real name? That was the key – a sort of password to a time crack that Gallifrey burst through. It was brilliant!
Although it wasn’t what Steven Moffat intended, Madame de Pompadour’s hint about something “more than just a secret” actually fits the Timeless Child storyline better than it does the events at Trenzalore. It suggests the Doctor’s true origins are connected to the creation of the Time Lords, a history the Doctor had forgotten.
We understand the memories of the Timeless Child were stored within the Tenth Doctor’s mind, and when Madame de Pompadour accessed them, the Doctor casually warned that old memories might resurface as a side effect.
Let’s imagine the entire history of Doctor Who is one continuous story. If we do that, it’s likely that when the Doctor looked into Madame de Pompadour’s mind in season 2, Pompadour briefly saw the Doctor’s early life – specifically, being experimented on by Tecteun.
