I was completely captivated by the first season! It did such a brilliant job of expanding the MonsterVerse beyond just Godzilla. It jumped between the past and present, revealing the fascinating family history of Bill Randa – you might remember him from Kong: Skull Island – and how the organization Monarch came to be, and the consequences of its founding. It really filled in so many gaps and added so much depth to the whole story.

Okay, so Season 2 picks up right where we left off with the Randas and Lee Shaw – Wyatt Russell really shines as the younger Shaw, and it’s fantastic seeing Kurt Russell reprise the role as the older version. This time around, they’re facing off against a truly massive threat, Titan X, and trying to keep it all under wraps. But it’s not just monsters they’re battling; we learn a lot more about the family’s history and how everything connects to the larger MonsterVerse we’ve seen in the films. Honestly, just like Godzilla dominates the monster world, Apple TV is proving to be the king when it comes to sci-fi shows.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Continues to Spotlight the Past to Propel the Future

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters picks up right where the first season ended, continuing the story without trying to drastically change direction. Viewers will see more of Bill Randa, Keiko, and Lee Shaw as they investigate the secrets behind the monsters, portals, and other strange phenomena.

Season 2 of Monarch delves deeper into the characters’ relationships, showing the ups and downs Bill experiences, particularly after the loss of his wife and best friend. The season’s story cleverly connects the events leading up to and including those seen in Kong: Skull Island, filling in missing pieces of the narrative.

Season 2 empowers the current-day characters more than the first season. Unlike Season 1, where Lee Shaw largely drove the action and the others seemed hesitant, Cate, Kentaro, and May take a more active role. The season also includes welcome scenes featuring the now-adult Hiroshi and Keiko, with Keiko finally escaping Axis Mundi, which helps to ground the present-day storyline, though it doesn’t quite reach the same level of engagement as the historical narrative.

It’s always a joy to watch these actors reprise their roles, and this season is no exception. The chance for a father and son to work together like this is incredibly special, and Season 2 of Monarch delivers some truly memorable scenes for them.

Okay, so this season is definitely a step up from the first! There’s way more action and things actually move faster, which is great. But, honestly, it still falls into some of the same patterns – a lot of running around chasing bad guys and trying to prevent some huge disaster. Luckily, those slow bits don’t happen as often, and the actors are really carrying things, making even the familiar storylines feel pretty engaging. They really saved it from getting boring!

Like most things Apple does, Monarch Season 2 isn’t necessarily what you expect, but it really pulls you in. Honestly, the drama is probably why people keep watching! I think it’s a fantastic addition to the MonsterVerse, even if it does have moments that feel a little slow or repeat things we’ve already seen. Overall, it’s a monstrously good time!
