Andi Oliver discusses her ‘misogynistic’ abusive father who ‘became a terrible person’ and ‘broke parts of her that took a long time to fix’

Andi Oliver has spoken about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father, who she says became difficult and prejudiced when she began going through puberty.

A judge on the Great British Menu, age 63, has shared that she felt a sense of relief when her father left when she was a child.

It really struck me when Andi shared how her dad’s words started to hurt her as she grew up. She described it as him ‘breaking parts of her,’ and she’s been working for a long time to heal from that. It was a really powerful thing to hear her say.

Andi explained that her father, though very affectionate towards her when she was little, started to criticize her harshly as she grew up and her body developed, due to his prejudiced beliefs about women.

In an interview with The i magazine, Andi explained that her father became abusive when she developed breasts, subjecting her to deeply hurtful and traumatic language.

‘It’s taken a long time for me to fix the parts of me that he broke.’

Andi described her father as someone whose mood changed quickly, going from being nice and giving to suddenly becoming angry.

The chef also shared that her father, a veteran of the Royal Air Force, had a hurtful nickname for her, using a derogatory term.

This news follows Andi recently sharing her difficult experiences in school, where she was often the only Black girl and faced bullying and racism.

I remember Andi telling me about her experience. She was born in London, but her family lived in Cyprus for a while when she was growing up. When she came back to England in the seventies, it was really tough for her. She felt incredibly alone and like everyone at school was picking on her. It was a difficult time, and she’s shared that it left a lasting impression.

In a recent interview with The Times, she described a frightening experience, saying it was cold and dark, and that she began having nightmares.

School was a difficult experience for me. Being the only Black girl there, I faced bullying and racism.

The television personality, who became known in the 1990s, explained that a particularly damaging part of the bullying experience was feeling like she was to blame.

She explained she kept what happened to herself for a long time and didn’t tell her parents because she felt deeply embarrassed and ashamed.

Andi is best known for her appearances on the hit BBC cooking show, Great British Menu.

She also wrote the popular cookbook, The Pepperpot Diaries: Stories From My Caribbean Table, which came out in 2023.

Andi was born in London, specifically Paddington, and grew up in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, starting at age 10. Her mother was a primary school teacher in Honington, Suffolk.

Oh my gosh, she looks amazing! I was so excited to hear she’s lost five stone, and she actually said it was thanks to Mounjaro! She called it ‘magical,’ and honestly, I totally get it. She’s never looked better, and I’m so happy for her – and secretly a little curious about Mounjaro, too!

The host of The Great British Menu recently told Good Housekeeping she used a weight-loss injection, alongside Peloton workouts and a healthy diet, to lose three stone, and she’s not embarrassed to admit it.

Andi shared that she’s lost five stone over the past four and a half years. She initially lost three stone through Peloton workouts and changes to her diet, and then lost an additional two stone with the help of Mounjaro.

‘The jab was brilliant for me – I can’t recommend it enough, and I’m not ashamed of it.’

The TV chef said that Mounjaro helped quiet the constant internal debate about food, describing it as a wonderful and freeing experience.

Andi looked confident and stylish in a tailored suit and her trademark black-rimmed glasses, posing for the March issue of the magazine with her daughter, Miquita Oliver.

The cookbook author explained she shared her experience with Mounjaro to help reduce the shame people often feel about it, acknowledging that struggling with weight can be a lonely experience.

She explained that she quit taking the weight loss drug after six months, saying she was happy with her size and didn’t want to lose any more weight.
