Tyson Gordon, a groom who joined the show ‘Married At First Sight’ later in the season, has expressed disappointment with how he came across while watching his wedding footage. However, he maintains he was simply being himself, despite receiving criticism.
The 30-year-old former Australian soldier told Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday that revisiting the episode was ‘very difficult,’ especially hearing himself talk about wanting a wife who embodied ‘masculine’ and ‘submissive’ traits.
‘Oh mate, where do I start? It’s quite confronting watching that, quite frankly,’ he said.
I’m a bit disappointed with how I handled that situation. I think I could have done better.
Tyson caused controversy on Monday’s episode of the show by questioning his wife, Steph Marshall, about being ‘woke’ and then calling her ‘frigid’ after their photoshoot. He now says producers asked him to keep bringing up the same issues while filming.
He admitted the show’s producers subtly influenced him regarding the dynamic they were trying to create between masculine and submissive roles.
People kept peppering me with questions, and it felt like I was repeating the same thing over and over again.
I just wanted the point to be made once, instead of being repeated so many times. Honestly, while watching the show, I even started disliking myself.
Even though he has some regrets, Tyson said he wouldn’t change himself. He does wish he’d brought up the more sensitive issues later, rather than right away.
‘Looking back on it, I could’ve maybe been a little bit more accepting towards Steph,’ he said.
I likely wouldn’t have mentioned masculine and feminine energies, or the topic of submission, so early in the conversation – those could have been discussed at a later time.
‘But other than that, I wouldn’t really have changed anything because I’m just being my true self.’
Tyson and Stephanie, a 32-year-old real estate agent, joined the show this week as new contestants. This happened after a lot of drama caused several couples – like Rebecca and Steve, and Brook and Chris – to break up.
The wedding quickly became strained when Tyson, during his vows, cautioned his new wife that he’d be unhappy if she adopted what he considers ‘woke culture.’ He later confessed he’d already sensed those beliefs based on her appearance.
When questioned about the absence of women on his team, Tyson rejected concerns that it was a problem, explaining he had intentionally created an all-male event.
He explained that he had planned to invite two women to his wedding.
I decided to keep the gathering small and invite mostly guys. There was a limit to how many people I could include.
Tyson emphasized that he truly wanted to find a partner and believed the relationship experts would connect him with someone who fit what he was looking for.
‘I was expecting someone, yeah, I was definitely expecting to find someone on the show,’ he said.
‘But yeah, unfortunately… that just didn’t really happen.
Steph is a good person, but I just didn’t feel a romantic connection with her.
Tyson admitted some of his remarks about Stephanie’s career goals were poorly worded, but he reaffirmed his desire for a traditional family structure when they have children. He then hinted that Stephanie seemed to want him to be the one to stay home and raise them.
He admitted his previous comments weren’t well-expressed and that he could have chosen his words more carefully.
I’m okay with her having a career now, but when we eventually have a family, I’d prefer a more traditional setup where she stays home to raise the kids. After they’re grown, she’s welcome to return to her career – that would be great.
It sounded like I was telling them they had to stay home and do all the housework, but that wasn’t my intention.
He said he sensed Stephanie preferred to be the main earner after she playfully suggested he stay home and take care of the house.
He felt like she wanted to be the one earning the money and for him to take a more passive role, but that wasn’t a dynamic he was interested in, he explained.
Tyson’s most controversial statements occurred when he tried to define ‘anti-woke,’ and his explanation quickly turned into a discussion of issues like immigration, the lack of affordable housing, and gender transition.
Australia is currently facing both a shortage of housing and a rising cost of living. At the same time, we’re welcoming around half a million new residents each year.
‘It just makes zero sense… we don’t have the room and the infrastructure to accommodate them.
I’m not opposed to immigration altogether, but our priority needs to be the well-being of Australians.
Tyson also insisted he has very few friends with opposing political views.
‘Do I have any woke friends?… not really,’ he said.
He promised to make the dinner parties more interesting, suggesting the new arrivals won’t be staying out of the spotlight.
‘You can definitely expect I’m gonna spice things up, for sure,’ he said.
‘There’s gonna be a lot of drama… tune in ’cause it’s gonna be interesting to watch.’
You know, I’ve been following the show, and despite some of the stronger opinions expressed, I was really glad to hear Tyson say he’s completely accepting of the same-sex couple this season. He made it clear it’s absolutely not a problem for him, and I think that’s a really positive message.
‘They’re actually quite a nice couple… they’re nice individuals,’ he said.
‘They do their thing, I’m gonna do my thing.’
He also said he didn’t think Stephanie held secretly progressive feminist views, and confessed he’d intentionally made some provocative statements just to cause a reaction.
He admitted to saying some foolish things the night before, specifically that she seemed overly concerned with social justice issues. ‘I don’t know why I even said that,’ he added.
I might have been intentionally creating drama, but it’s reality TV, so that’s just part of the show.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen a lot of public reactions, but what’s happening with Tyson right now is truly concerning. He’s shared that the criticism he’s receiving has gone way beyond just disagreeing with his views – he’s actually been getting death threats since the episode aired. It’s one thing to offer feedback, but threats are never okay and it’s a really worrying escalation.
He expressed his disappointment with recent comments, including challenges to his veteran status and disturbing death threats he’s been receiving.
‘I feel like that’s completely inappropriate… it’s a reality TV show, for God’s sakes.
Honestly, people need to relax and remember it’s just entertainment. Sending death threats over a TV show is a huge overreaction.
