Toby Jones is known for many great roles, but according to Rotten Tomatoes, his best-rated TV show is the BBC sitcom Detectorists. It has a perfect 100% score from critics. The show originally aired in 2014 and was created and written by Mackenzie Crook. Now is a great time to watch all three seasons, as Crook’s newest series, Small Prophets, is currently very popular on the BBC’s streaming platform.
I absolutely loved this comedy show! It’s about two mates, Andy and Lance – Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones play them – and they’re obsessed with metal detecting. They reckon it’s the closest you can get to time travel, which is a pretty cool way to look at it, and it’s what really brought them together as best friends.
I was pretty stoked to see the cast list for this! Pearce Quigley, who I remember from Small Prophets, is in it, along with some other faces I recognized. Like, Rachael Stirling was in Midsomer Murders and Grantchester, and Sophie Thompson’s been in Feel Good and Inside No. 9 – I love her work! Divian Ladwa is cool too, I’ve seen him in Silent Witness and Black Ops. It’s a solid lineup, honestly.
