I just finished watching the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and wow! Now that the finale’s here, I’m really excited to talk about how it compares to the books it’s based on. Be warned though – I’m going to be sharing some major spoilers!
In the sixth episode of season one, “The Morrow,” Dunk is still shaken by Baelor Targaryen’s death during the Trial of Seven, but he chooses to continue traveling with Egg as his squire. However, a brief scene after the opening credits makes it clear that Egg’s father, Maekar, never approved of this arrangement.
Ira Parker, the showrunner, discussed the show’s shift from the unclear circumstances presented in George R.R. Martin’s original story, and how Egg’s continued deception of Dunk will play out in the second season. In an interview with Collider, Parker revealed they’ve explored many different possibilities for the season, both large and small, but haven’t finalized the direction yet. He also confirmed that Egg’s running away will be revisited later in the series.
Parker explained that while Egg’s actions created a surprising moment, they weren’t intended to take over the planned storyline for the next season. He initially saw it as a lighthearted joke, but fan reactions convinced him it needed to be addressed. Ultimately, he wants to ensure this doesn’t overshadow the core story that was being developed in season two.
Parker believed the show’s writers had leeway because the book was unclear about the conversation between Egg and his father following their talk with Maekar. Originally intended as a funny scene about the Targaryens misplacing Egg, the situation likely won’t have serious repercussions, and Maekar will probably just accept Egg’s decision.
Check out Parker’s full comments on this below:
When adapting the story, we felt comfortable with our interpretation because the book doesn’t directly state Maekar formally agreed to let his son become a squire. They discussed it, and Dunk raised a valid point, but Maekar simply walked away. Egg then appeared shortly after, leaving it open to interpretation – perhaps he was hiding nearby, or maybe he followed his father, who was returning to the castle wanting to leave. Egg then asked if he could join them. This ambiguity allowed us to add to the story without contradicting the original text, and we were careful to avoid any inconsistencies, as our changes could have wider implications later on.
In the episode, Maekar suggests Dunk and Egg travel to Summerhall, where Egg could become his squire and Dunk could continue his training. However, after everything that’s happened, Dunk wants to avoid getting involved with the royal family. He later suggests Egg join him on his travels instead, but Maekar turns down that idea.
Dunk thinks Egg has the potential to become a truly good person if he learns to live a more modest life. He’s noticed how Egg’s older brothers were negatively influenced by their royal upbringing. However, because Egg has been hurt by his brother Aerion and frustrated by Daeron’s lack of motivation, Maekar wants to keep him nearby and protected.
The show aims to stay true to the original story, so Parker doesn’t want Egg’s lie to cause major changes. The showrunner wants to avoid creating a completely different storyline. It’s likely Dunk and Egg will cross paths with Maekar again, and he’ll witness something that convinces him his son is better off as a wandering knight, allowing the story to progress naturally.
HBO quickly renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second season, even before the first season aired. Showrunner George R.R. Martin has discussed a long-term vision for the Game of Thrones spinoff, potentially lasting 12 to 15 seasons and covering the complete story of Dunk and Egg. Now that the show has become a hit, fans are excited to see what happens next with the pair, especially how they navigate the consequences of Egg’s decision.
All episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are available to stream on HBO Max.
