Lucy Fallon, known for her role on Coronation Street, has shared that she was hospitalized for five weeks due to a severe mental health struggle. She described it as the lowest point in her life.
The 30-year-old actress, known for her role as Bethany Platt on the ITV soap opera, has spoken publicly for the first time about a very difficult experience. She revealed she felt so hopeless that she couldn’t picture a positive future.
She shared on the Secure the Insecure podcast that she’s dealt with insecurity since she was young. This became more challenging during lockdown after she left Coronation Street and found herself without much work.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen how timing can really impact a career! Lucy, an actress, actually left her role on a popular soap opera back in March of 2020 – right when the first lockdown started and everything just shut down. It was a tough time for everyone in the entertainment industry, with work becoming scarce. But things have a funny way of working out, and I’m happy to share that she recently returned to the show in 2023!
She explained that she had reached her lowest point and was going through a very difficult time.
I struggled with my mental health significantly towards the end of 2020, and ended up spending about five weeks at The Priory clinic. I was in a very dark place and couldn’t see a way to feel better.
The Priory, a well-known psychiatric hospital in southwest London, offers inpatient care costing over £7,000 per week. It has treated many famous people, including Robbie Williams, Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss, and Paul Gascoigne.
Lucy, who is engaged to footballer Ryan Ledson and has two young children with him – a three-year-old son named Sonny and a thirteen-month-old daughter named Nancy – shared that she didn’t choose to go to the facility herself.
I had to go to the hospital, and after that, a lot of other people got involved – my mom, my sisters, and some former colleagues.
It felt like everyone around me was realizing I needed help, that things had gotten out of control. I really resisted going, and I even remember how strongly I didn’t want to go through with it.
The actress, originally from Blackpool, explained that she initially felt out of place. She described feeling like she didn’t deserve to be there, and admitted to a strange, unfamiliar feeling, questioning why she had been chosen.
It took a few weeks to adjust, but I soon started to feel comfortable. In fact, after just one week, I actually enjoyed it and felt quite safe. I also met some lovely people there, and I still keep in touch with a few of them now.
Lucy acknowledged that leaving the facility was a difficult experience. She needed medication for a while, but she’s no longer taking it, and she temporarily moved back in with her parents to help her get back on her feet.
Honestly, it was so weird getting back to normal after everything. It took me a minute to even function, you know? Just… existing, going about my day, felt totally off. But I have to say, the people around me were incredible. They really helped me through it all, and I don’t know what I would have done without them. Seriously, they’re the best!
Spending a few weeks with my parents after my trip, instead of heading straight home, was really lovely – especially being able to have dinner made for me each night, and not having to worry about laundry!
Looking back at who she used to be, she realized it felt like a lifetime ago. She explained, ‘It really feels like a completely different life.’
It feels like I’m a completely different person now. I was fortunate enough to overcome that difficult time, but I know many people struggle to escape those feelings and it’s incredibly challenging to do so.
Honestly, meeting my fiancé, Ryan – he’s a footballer with Preston North End – was a total game-changer for me. We actually connected on Raya, which is a dating app, and it really helped me start a fresh, exciting new chapter in my life. It was exactly what I needed!
She confessed that it took her a while to feel secure again. She felt weighed down by everything she’d been through and spoke with him about it almost immediately.
I’ve realized that what happened was just a temporary setback in my personal well-being. I know I deserve happiness, a good relationship, and the job I’ve earned through a lot of hard work.
I’m not sure if my time at The Priory helped, but I felt consistently good afterward.
Early in 2022, she experienced a heartbreaking miscarriage after becoming pregnant. She described feeling completely devastated, questioning how something she’d hoped would be a wonderful new beginning could be taken away so suddenly. She also felt isolated, as if life continued normally for everyone else while she remained stuck in her grief. She admitted this struggle lasted for quite some time and was difficult to overcome.
She said getting pregnant again soon after her loss was the one thing that truly helped her cope. The birth of their son, Sonny Jude, the following year, allowed her to see the experience in a new, more positive light.
She explained, ‘Without that difficult experience, we wouldn’t have our son. As awful as it was, it actually made me realize how much I wanted to start a family.’
Ryan proposed to Lucy on her 30th birthday last November. Their daughter, Nancy, was born in January 2025.
Lucy returned to Coronation Street on New Year’s Eve 2023, reprising her role as Bethany.
She added that she is now in a better place than she has ever been, even if she has some down days.
She admitted she doesn’t always feel energetic in the mornings. ‘Sometimes I wake up and just don’t feel like dealing with the day,’ she said.
‘But then other days I wake up and I’m like, come on, let’s seize the day. Let’s go.
I’m incredibly grateful, but it’s also really overwhelming. There are times I wake up and worry about how I’ll manage caring for my two children all day. It’s frightening, even though I love them.
She added that, overall, she feels mentally at peace and has a good sense of self, even though she has difficult days sometimes.
