Kate Lawler recently had breast surgery because one of her breast implants ruptured. She shared the news publicly.
The winner of Big Brother, age 45, recently shared details about a medical procedure she underwent last week. She noticed a hardening in her left breast and went to see her doctor as a result.
She revealed on her podcast, ‘Boj and Kate Have A Lot on Their Plate,’ that she’d undergone breast augmentation surgery, clarifying it was a replacement procedure.
‘I got the surgery done five days ago so I’m still very much in the recovery period.’
The radio host, who has a four-year-old daughter named Noa with her husband Martin Bojtos, first had breast augmentation surgery in 2015.
She revealed that she had breast augmentation about ten years ago, but it was a very natural-looking procedure. She’d always liked her breasts, but they began to sag with time, so she decided to get a lift to restore their shape.
She explained that she consulted a surgeon who suggested a small, discreet implant. She agreed to the procedure.
A decade later, I noticed a hardening in my left breast. I saw my family doctor, who sent me to a breast specialist. Naturally, I feared the worst.
She said the implant in my left breast has ruptured and is leaking, so I need to have it removed.
An encapsulated implant happens when scar tissue builds up around the implant and becomes tight, leading to a firm feeling and pain.
If a breast implant breaks or starts leaking – sometimes called an ‘exploded’ implant – it usually needs to be surgically removed and replaced.
Kate explained that problems can occur at any point, from the time of the surgery until the implants need to be removed. However, she also noted that these implants are generally recommended to be replaced every 10 to 15 years regardless.
The radio host, famous for winning Big Brother in 2002, shared details about her experiences with doctors, including a particularly unsettling consultation with one of them.
She explained that she didn’t feel a connection with him. He was impolite and had food stuck in his teeth when she arrived for her appointment. She wished he’d at least taken a moment to rinse his mouth with water before their consultation.
Kate described the doctor’s behavior as shocking. She said that during a ten-minute appointment, he immediately told her to remove her shirt while she was sitting across from him at his desk.
Typically, the process involves going behind a screen with someone present to supervise. You would undress and let them know you’re ready, then a healthcare professional would come and perform an examination.
I was sitting across from him, and then I suddenly stood up and removed my shirt and bra. He just stared at my breasts, then poked one of them and pulled out a tape measure, saying he could proceed.
I finally saw a skilled surgeon for a consultation. A nurse led me to a private area where I changed, and after she asked if I was ready, I felt confident I’d chosen the right specialist.
Kate had surgery last Thursday that lasted an hour and a half. She received general anesthesia and stayed in the hospital overnight to recover.
She explained that she hadn’t eaten or drunk anything since the day before. She felt very hungry and thirsty all day, and said that being told not to drink water actually made her thirst worse.
I woke up feeling really unwell. I was taken back to my hospital room and I mostly remember feeling completely disoriented.
I drifted in and out of consciousness for three hours and, in that state, accidentally knocked over the bedside table. It shattered a glass bottle and a glass, scattering my belongings all over the room.
Kate’s efforts to reach her husband became even more complicated when she accidentally gave a friend who was visiting the incorrect phone number. Her husband ended up having to message Boj on Instagram to let him know she was alright.
I’ve been focusing on recovery since my surgery, but honestly, it’s been tough to stick to everything the doctor recommended. I really want to take it easy and heal properly, but life keeps getting in the way, you know?
The surgeon told me to rest for 24 hours and avoid housework for a week,” she explained. “I just laughed because I’m the only one who does the housework, and my husband doesn’t help at all.
I ended up staying in the hospital overnight, but it wasn’t actually necessary – I could have been discharged the same day.
I decided to stay in the hospital overnight because I was worried I’d start cleaning as soon as I got home. I was only doing small tasks, like cleaning the kitchen, and I made sure to avoid anything strenuous, like reaching for high cupboards.
