It’s unusual for a video game adaptation to be better than the game itself, but a recent steampunk series on Netflix comes remarkably close – it might actually be superior to its source material.
For years, movies and shows based on video games weren’t known for being very good – they often failed to live up to the quality of the original games. But recently, especially with TV series, things have dramatically improved. Shows like The Last of Us and Fallout have shown that video game adaptations can actually be excellent.
A two-season steampunk series on Netflix perfectly illustrates how video game adaptations are improving on television – and sometimes even surpassing the original games themselves.
Netflix’s Arcane Is A Rare Game Adaptation That Beats Its Source Material
The Netflix series Arcane adds depth to characters originally from the game, reimagining their backstories and motivations. For example, Jayce, who comes across as simply proud and confident in the game, is portrayed as someone well-intentioned but inexperienced in politics and struggling with his own vulnerabilities. Similarly, Viktor, typically seen as a stereotypical ‘mad scientist’ in the game, becomes a deeply sympathetic and tragic figure in the show.
The Netflix game adaptation creates a believable and engaging world by focusing on the strong social and economic divide between Piltover and Zaun, making their conflict feel real and impactful.
Unlike many video game adaptations, Arcane successfully appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers. The show also isn’t afraid to introduce fresh characters, such as Silco, expanding the world beyond the existing games.
This creates a stronger, more interesting villain for the cities of Piltover and Zaun, and also adds political tension to the main storyline.
Why Netflix Has Still Not Renewed Arcane For Season 3
Despite its popularity, Arcane wasn’t canceled by Netflix. The creators, Christian Linke and Alex Yee, intentionally ended the show after two seasons. They felt continuing it just to capitalize on its success would have ultimately hurt the story’s quality. They chose to prioritize a strong narrative over extending it unnecessarily.
The second season of the Netflix series Arcane wraps things up nicely, giving most of the main characters a clear and complete ending. Because of this satisfying conclusion, another season isn’t really necessary, and that’s likely why it hasn’t been picked up for renewal.
Luckily, the Netflix series is enjoyable to watch again and again, making it perfect for viewers who loved it initially.
