Martin Short is known for playing funny, mischievous characters, and something he recently admitted is perfectly in line with that reputation. He revealed during an interview that he almost caused a disaster at Selena Gomez’s wedding – nearly ruining the cake! While the story itself is hilarious, I especially loved his witty response to Paul Rudd.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, comedy legend and SNL alum Kurt Russell shared a funny story about attending Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding. He explained how a simple assumption he made about the reception led to an awkward moment. Russell recounted that as Steve Martin, his fellow Only Murders in the Building costar, was leaving, he insisted Russell couldn’t leave until he’d had a piece of cake.
I honestly just thought there were separate cakes for each part of the event. Steve was heading out, and I felt bad he hadn’t had any wedding cake, so I started cutting him a slice. I cut into one side, then the other… and that’s when everyone started yelling my name – ‘Marty!’ It was a total surprise, and I had no idea what was happening!
Short quickly discovered he hadn’t grabbed a random extra cake – it was the actual wedding cake! And this realization happened just an hour before it was supposed to be shown to the couple. Realizing how serious his mistake was, the actor briefly thought about quietly leaving. He turned to Paul Rudd and his wife, who were sitting close by, and said with a straight face:
So… do we just leave?
Fortunately, the chef managed to quickly fix up the cake at the last moment. While it wasn’t perfect when it was presented, it looked generally good. Despite this hiccup, Short emphasized that his feelings for Gomez – whom he considers like a daughter – haven’t changed, even if his invitation to future events might be in doubt.
The actor from Innerspace remembered looking at his friend, Paul Rudd, after the incident and making a joke that was perfectly delivered and very much in the style of Martin Short. He continued by saying:
I glanced at Paul and jokingly said, ‘I guess this proves why I shouldn’t be trusted with anything important.’
Short also admitted he and Martin initially tried to cover up what happened, but that didn’t last. He then continued, saying:
As I was leaving, Selena came over and said, ‘Hey Marty, I hear you tried to eat my cake.’
Thankfully, everything turned out okay in the end. Gomez and Blanco were still able to cut the cake and the party continued without any other mishaps – at least, none that we heard about. We’re all glad Short told us what happened!
Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are the stars of the popular series Only Murders in the Building, which you can watch on Hulu. The show has been renewed for a sixth season, and although we don’t know exactly when it will air, it’s likely to be on television sometime in 2026. Hopefully, we’ll see many more funny adventures from these three friends!
