Marty Supreme left Sunday’s BAFTA Awards empty-handed, failing to win any of the 11 categories it was nominated for.
Everyone expected Timothée Chalamet, age 30, to win Best Actor. He’d already won the same award at both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes last month.
I was absolutely devastated when Timothée didn’t win! I mean, everyone thought it was a sure thing. But then… Robert Aramayo? Don’t get me wrong, he’s good, but beating both Timothée and Leonardo DiCaprio for that role in ‘I Swear’? It was a total shock, honestly. I couldn’t believe my ears when they announced his name. It just felt…wrong. I’m still not over it!
Timothée Chalamet’s new film, where he plays a hopeful table tennis player named Marty Mauser, now shares the record for the most BAFTA losses with two other movies: 1969’s Woman In Love and 2004’s Finding Neverland.
Marty Supreme received nominations for Best Film and Best Supporting Actress. While One Battle After Another won Best Film, Odessa A’Zion didn’t win Best Supporting Actress – Wunmi Mosaku, from the film Sinners, took home that award.
Despite receiving a leading fourteen nominations, the film One Battle After Another won six BAFTAs, including awards for Best Film and Best Director. Surprisingly, however, its stars didn’t win in the Leading Actor or Supporting Actress categories.
Meanwhile Sinners, nominated in 13 categories, took home only three.
Leonardo DiCaprio has received more BAFTA nominations than any other actor, but he’s only won the award one time, for his role in The Revenant.
Whether Robert Aramayo’s performance impacts the Oscar chances of Timothée Chalamet (or himself) is a matter of discussion, though it’s important to remember Aramayo wasn’t even nominated for an award.
This year’s nominees for the Best Actor Oscar are Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Wagner Moura, Ethan Hawke, and Michael B. Jordan.
Robert, clearly moved while accepting his Best Actor award, expressed his disbelief, saying he could hardly believe he was standing on stage, let alone surrounded by such esteemed colleagues like Leonardo DiCaprio.
He expressed his disbelief at winning the award, saying he was truly surprised. He explained that he was incredibly impressed by all the other nominees in the category.
I remember when Ethan Hawke spoke at Juilliard while I was a student. He gave a really insightful talk about having a lasting career as an actor – specifically, taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally, and avoiding harmful habits. It truly resonated with everyone there.
When the camera showed the other nominees, Leonardo DiCaprio was seen clapping respectfully, and Timothée Chalamet offered a smile.
When Robert’s name was called, his father immediately stood up, cheering with joy, and rushed to give him a hug.
Jessie Buckley shared a heartfelt story about her acting journey, from admiring Judi Dench and experimenting with overly dark fake tans, to becoming a celebrated award-winning actress. She recounted this as she accepted the award for Leading Actress.
The 36-year-old actress tearfully accepted the award for her performance in Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet. The film received a total of two awards at the ceremony.
Jessie is predicted to win the Best Actress Oscar, and she graciously thanked her fellow nominees when accepting an award.
The actor will play Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare, in the movie adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s novel of the same name.
She expressed how honored she was, saying she never imagined as a child that she’d have the opportunity to make a film, but here she is, living that dream.
I met with my agent, Lindy King, in London, looking quite a mess – I had a terrible fake tan, large white hoop earrings, and a red polka dot skirt and top. Despite my appearance, I actually told her I hoped to become an actress like Judi Dench.
Honestly, I still can’t wrap my head around how she even thought of doing that! It’s just… incredible. And I owe her so much – she’s the one who always pushed me to question things, to be myself, to really live. Thank you, Lindy, for inspiring me to be curious, a little rebellious, and just… human.
I owe this to the women who have guided me, and continue to show me new ways of doing things.
While thanking her fellow nominees, Jessie accidentally left out Kate Hudson and jokingly asked the audience if she’d forgotten anyone.
She then added ‘I am in awe of all your incredible performances thank you.’
Maggie O’Farrell, thank you for giving this character a voice. You portrayed the mother with incredible depth, bringing her to life alongside the monumental figure of Shakespeare.
She finished her speech with a tearful glance at her daughter, dedicating her accomplishment by saying, ‘Being your mother is the greatest joy of my life, and I share this with you.’
