Robert Aramayo surprised many in Hollywood, including Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio, by winning the Leading Actor award at the EE BAFTA Film Awards. He was recognized for his outstanding portrayal of John Davidson in the film I Swear.
Honestly, everyone was predicting a surprise winner at the BAFTAs this year, and it felt like Aramayo had a good shot because the awards often go to homegrown talent. Wunmi Mosaku winning Supporting Actress for Sinners was cool, but Aramayo’s win was the real shocker – most of us were sure Timothée Chalamet would take it home for Marty Supreme.
Aramayo was overcome with emotion and couldn’t speak when he was announced as the winner, simply saying, “I can’t believe it!” He then expressed his gratitude to director Kirk Jones and everyone involved in the film I Swear, praising all the nominees as incredibly talented. He fondly remembered Ethan Hawke giving a speech at his school years ago.

Everyone predicted Timothée Chalamet would win, but if not him, Leonardo DiCaprio had a good chance at a second BAFTA. However, in a surprise win, Franco Aramayo took home the award, beating out Chalamet, DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Michael B. Jordan, and Jesse Plemons.
Aramayo took home two awards, including the EE Rising Star Award, which is unique because it’s the only BAFTA award decided by public vote. He was up against Miles Caton, Chase Infiniti, Archie Madekwe, and Posy Sterling for the prize.

I was super stoked to hear that I Swear actually won a BAFTA for its casting! Lauren Evans, the casting director, accepted the award. It was up against some other great shows too – Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sentimental Value, and Sinners were all nominated in the same category.
