Wunmi Mosaku, known for her role in ‘Sinners,’ made history as the first British performer to win an award at this year’s British Academy Film Awards, held Sunday at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Following the glamorous red carpet arrival, the biggest names in Hollywood gathered at the famous venue to announce the winners.
Mosaku, expecting her second child, expressed gratitude to her husband, family, and daughter while on stage.
The actress explained that portraying the priestess Annie in the vampire series Sinners allowed her to reconnect with a side of herself she had suppressed while adjusting to a new life as an immigrant.
Ryan Coogler created the character of Annie, a Hoodoo priestess in ‘Sinners,’ with Mosaku in mind. Mosaku, who grew up in Manchester, previously spent eleven years singing with the Manchester Girls’ Choir.
After graduating from Rada, she quickly gained recognition for her role in the 2010 film I Am Slave, where she portrayed a Sudanese girl who was sold into slavery.
She received a BAFTA award for her supporting role as Gloria, Damilola Taylor’s mother, in the TV drama Damilola, Our Loved Boy. She has also been in major films like Deadpool & Wolverine and Batman vs Superman.

Wunmi, a previous Bafta TV Award winner for her work in ‘Damilola, Our Loved Boy,’ shared her excitement, saying, ‘We absolutely loved this film, and it feels incredible.’
She described the positive reception to their film, ‘Of Sinners,’ as incredibly rewarding. ‘We put our hearts and souls into this project, so seeing audiences connect with it last year was amazing,’ she said. ‘These nominations are just the perfect finishing touch.’
Avatar: Fire and Ash won the first award of the evening, taking home the prize for Special Visual Effects.
This year, Dame Donna Langley will receive BAFTA’s highest honor, the Fellowship Award, as part of the Special Awards ceremony.

This year’s BAFTA Film Award nominees for the first time include Robert Aramayo, Odessa A’zion, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Michael B. Jordan, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Stellan Skarsgård, and Teyana Taylor.
Emma Baehr, who leads awards and content at BAFTA, expressed excitement about welcoming the talented nominees to London for the EE BAFTA Film Awards. She described the event as a lively celebration of the artistry, skill, and teamwork behind both British and international films.
