As a Kendrick fan, I’ve always appreciated how he doesn’t hold back. He’s never been afraid to challenge other rappers when he feels like they’re not bringing their best. It’s part of what makes him such a compelling artist, honestly.
Kendrick Lamar is currently the rapper you absolutely don’t want to challenge. He’s known for responding to disses, and when he does, he delivers a powerful response. Young Thug is now finding this out firsthand, as Kendrick has mentioned him in a track.
Kendrick Lamar playfully teased Young Thug on two songs from his cousin Baby Keem’s new album, Ca$ino. Fans are curious about what Kendrick said and why he chose to address Young Thug this way. Considering their interactions over the past year, the reason seems clear.
Breaking down Kendrick’s jab at Young Thug
On the fourth track of his album Ca$ino, a song called “Good Flirts,” Kendrick Lamar includes a pointed jab. Within the song’s theme of relationships, he raps, “Yeah, I gossip with my girl like I’m Young Thug too.”
This short clip is amusing because it plays on the many jail calls leaked last year from Young Thug. Those calls showed the Atlanta rapper was quite the talker, openly criticizing everyone from Glorilla to André 3000.
As a fan, I found this line from Kendrick particularly interesting. Apparently, he and Baby Keem were actually talked about negatively in those jail calls that have been circulating. So, this isn’t just a random shout-out – it feels like Kendrick is directly responding to what was said about him and Keem, which makes it way more impactful.
During a phone call, Young Thug expressed frustration with Kendrick Lamar for refusing to collaborate on a song. He criticized Kendrick for not sharing his talent with other artists, calling him selfish and claiming that this would prevent Kendrick from ever surpassing Drake in popularity.
Young Thug also claimed Kendrick Lamar hadn’t helped launch anyone’s career, even including his own cousin, Baby Keem, whom he insultingly called “fake Keem.” Given Young Thug’s disrespectful comments about Keem, it’s understandable why Kendrick responded with a diss track.
Kendrick’s response was perfectly executed. Even though it was just one line, it was incredibly effective, especially considering their past issues. It was a clever and confident way to playfully respond to everything Young Thug had said.
Adding this line to a song with Baby Keem, especially since he was also involved in the issues with Young Thug, was the perfect touch. It was the ideal place for that lyric, and it flowed naturally with the song’s theme of love.
It’s unclear if Young Thug will respond to Kendrick’s recent criticisms. However, right now, Kendrick is winning the exchange, largely because he’s been more concise.
