Russo Brothers’ $200M Netflix Franchise Seemingly Shelved Following Their Marvel Studios Return

While the Russo brothers are known for their work directing the recent Avengers films for Marvel Studios, some of their other projects haven’t been as successful. After finishing Avengers: Endgame, they started their own production company, AGBO, and began creating films like The Gray Man, The Electric State, and Cherry.

Although the Russo Brothers haven’t replicated the blockbuster success of Avengers, their film The Gray Man was encouraging. Starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, this action-packed spy thriller cost around $200 million to make and became one of Netflix’s biggest hits, ranking as the ninth most-watched film ever on the platform.

So, remember The Gray Man on Netflix? It felt like they were immediately planning a whole series of movies with the Russo Brothers, but it sounds like those plans might be on hold. I was at the premiere for their new film, The Bluff, and Anthony Russo let slip to Screen Rant that there isn’t much happening with a sequel right now. He did say people are still talking about it, but that’s a long way from a confirmed green light. It’s a shame, because I thought there was potential there, but it seems the momentum has definitely slowed down.

As a huge Marvel fan, I was thrilled when the Russo Brothers announced they were coming back to the MCU in July 2024! They’ve been incredibly busy ever since, practically living on set for most of 2025 while filming Avengers: Doomsday, which is finally hitting theaters December 18th. And get this – they’re already gearing up to start work on their next big project, Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for release in December 2027. It’s going to be an amazing couple of years for Marvel fans!

Despite challenges, the Russo brothers are still pursuing projects through their company, AGBO. They envisioned The Gray Man as the beginning of a new series for them and Netflix. In 2022, they stated their original plan was to build an interconnected universe around the film, including a follow-up movie starring Ryan Gosling and a separate spin-off series.

We’re incredibly grateful for the amazing response to the film from fans worldwide. We always envisioned The Gray Man as the start of a larger story, and we’re excited that Netflix is moving forward with a sequel starring Ryan Gosling, plus another script we’ll be sharing details about soon.

Following their work on the Avengers films, the Russo Brothers saw success with The Gray Man, while other projects like The Electric State and Cherry didn’t reach the same audience. Released on Netflix in July 2022, The Gray Man featured a star-studded cast including Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, and Wagner Moura. The film centers on Gosling’s character, a CIA operative forced to go on the run from a ruthless former colleague turned mercenary, played by Evans.

Can The Gray Man Franchise Be Revived?

Despite growing excitement for a potential universe based on The Gray Man, recent statements from the Russo brothers indicate the project has been put on hold after almost three years with no updates.

Okay, so everyone’s wondering what the Russo brothers are up to next, and it seems pretty clear their focus is completely on those upcoming Avengers movies. Their production company, AGBO, is still working on things like Extraction 3 and a spin-off series, which is great news for fans of that franchise. But as for the Russo brothers themselves directing anything else? It doesn’t look like they’re taking on any new film projects beyond their Marvel commitments right now. They’re all-in on the superhero front, and everything else is on pause.

There’s a chance a new director could revive The Gray Man franchise. If not, updates on The Gray Man 2 probably won’t appear until after Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Gray Man franchise has a lot of potential for future installments, as there are almost 15 novels by Mark Greaney that could be adapted into movies. The biggest hurdle will be scheduling, since both Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans are currently committed to several other film projects.
