Okay, so Godzilla and Kong are back for a second season on Apple TV, and get this – it’s already made history! A week before the premiere on February 27th, the show broke a world record. I’m genuinely curious to see how they managed that before anyone’s even seen the new episodes, and it definitely has my attention now.
Everyone is excited for the return of Monarch, the series starring Kurt and Wyatt Russell as older and younger versions of Lee Shaw. The show continues the story of uncovering the secrets of the Monarch organization and the massive creatures living deep within the Earth. To promote the series, a spectacular drone show – so large it broke a Guinness World Record – lit up the sky above Hollywood Forever Cemetery on February 20th.
A spectacular drone show featuring Godzilla, Kong, and a new Titan was recently performed for attendees including Russells, Anders Holm, Mari Yamamoto, and Joe Tippett. Over 3,000 drones soared nearly 500 feet into the air, creating a dazzling display that spanned 1,000 feet in every direction and was visible from more than three miles away. The 12-minute show, set to music by composer Leopold Ross, uniquely combined traditional drones with pyrodrones to simulate Godzilla’s iconic atomic breath. This groundbreaking production has officially broken the record for the tallest aerial depiction of a fictional character created with drones. You can view a recording of the show below.
‘Monarch’ Is Looking to Make a Monster Return to Apple TV
The MonsterVerse franchise has become very popular in both theaters and on streaming services. Season 2 of Monarch will connect different parts of the storyline, continuing right after the events of Season 1. The future of the Monarch team and the entire world are at stake.
Season 1 heavily featured Godzilla and the Hollow Earth, but Season 2 shifts the focus to Kong. The story picks up on Skull Island, in a newly discovered village, where a massive and dangerous new Titan is about to emerge. Producers have been building anticipation for this Titan, known as Titan X, promising it’s unlike anything viewers have seen before.
Though Season 2 of Monarch hasn’t premiered yet, plans for future MonsterVerse movies are already in motion. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will be the next big team-up for the Titans, aiming to follow the success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire when it hits theaters in March 2027. In addition, Wyatt Russell will star in a spin-off series exploring the backstory of his character, Lee Shaw. Russell recently shared with MovieWeb that filming is scheduled to begin this spring.
As a film buff, I’m really hyped about this project. It feels like a huge, established world, but with room to push boundaries. What’s particularly exciting is the nostalgic vibe – we’re leaning into that 80s aesthetic, which hasn’t been fully explored in large-scale productions before. Plus, the characters and stories they’re building are fantastic. Honestly, I’ve read the first few scripts, and it’s the most excited I’ve been about a project in ages. It’s got real potential!
You can start streaming Season 1 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters now, and Season 2 will be available on Apple TV starting February 27th.
