Hilary Duff recently opened up about her complicated relationship with her father, following critical comments about him and her sister Haylie in her latest album.
Hilary Duff’s parents, Robert and Susan Duff, separated in 2008, twenty years after their marriage and four years after her popular show, Lizzie McGuire, ended.
Robert was jailed for 10 days in Texas because he violated a court order by selling family property without permission. A judge held him in contempt for this action.
He admitted on Inside Edition that he had been unfaithful in the marriage and expressed deep regret over the impact it had on their daughters.
Hilary, age 38, debuted her new album, Luck… or Something, this Friday. One song on the album, called “The Optimist,” includes the raw and honest line: “I wish I could sleep on planes and that my father would really love me.”
She recently clarified her relationship with Robert, explaining that it’s similar to her relationship with her father – sometimes they connect, and sometimes they don’t. While she generally maintains a positive outlook, she acknowledged that she’s faced difficult times, which is just a part of life, according to Rolling Stone.

Hilary recently discussed the painful split with her sister on her podcast, ‘We Don’t Talk.’ She admitted she doesn’t understand how they grew apart, saying she ‘doesn’t even know what it was about’ and is heartbroken over losing their close relationship.
People keep asking how you are, and I wish I could say things are great. But honestly, I have no idea. All I ever tell them is that we’ve stopped talking – we don’t discuss anything anymore, not even what’s bothering us.
Hilary, the more well-known sister, sings about offering everything she has, even sharing the best parts, if jealousy is the reason for someone’s unhappiness.
Let’s really talk this through. I want to understand your side, and I want you to understand mine, like we used to when we were kids. I’m tired of being sad that we’ve stopped talking and that you won’t even discuss what’s going on.
Oh my gosh, when “When We Don’t Talk” dropped, everyone knew it had to be about Haylie! And Hilary finally confirmed it on CBS Mornings – she straight-up said it’s totally about her sister! I knew it! I just knew it! It all makes so much sense now!
She shared that the hardest part of her life right now is being separated from her sister. She hesitated to talk about it publicly, but ultimately decided to because it’s a true reflection of what she’s going through.
Hilary noted how strange it feels to be alone when so many others are also experiencing that feeling of being without a partner.
She admitted she wasn’t confident the song would fix things with Haylie. She worried Haylie might not even listen, or know how to respond. She also felt frustrated that something so deeply personal was now public.
The actress from ‘How I Met Your Father’ explained she wasn’t intending to be negative, she was simply sharing what happened to her personally, and that’s all she wanted to say about it.
