The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a huge, interconnected web of stories, making it the longest-running and most successful film and TV franchise ever. Though Marvel plans to continue this connected universe for years to come, they’ve also started creating shows like Daredevil: Born Again that aren’t as directly tied to the main MCU storyline. According to the show’s creator, Dario Scardapane, that independence is likely to remain the case.
Fans waited a long time to see Daredevil back on screen. Following the cancellation of Netflix’s Marvel shows, including Daredevil and Jessica Jones, it was unclear what would happen to those characters. Then, Charlie Cox made a surprise appearance as Matt Murdock in the Spider-Man film No Way Home, and Vincent D’Onofrio returned as Kingpin in Hawkeye. Now, five years later, a new season of the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again is almost here. While the show will bring back Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, it doesn’t seem to be connected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline.
In an interview with SFX Magazine, Scardapane clarified that despite wanting to see characters like Thor or Captain America appear in the Daredevil series, it’s unlikely to happen. He stated:
Honestly, I’m a big fan of the source material, so I was immediately hooked! What’s really interesting is how this series fits into the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve already seen characters like Daredevil show up elsewhere, and we know more connections are coming. It’s fun because we joke that while the main MCU stories are happening ‘uptown,’ we’re focused on a more street-level, ‘downtown’ world, specifically Hell’s Kitchen in New York. I imagine our characters might occasionally venture into those larger events, but our stories are really about the small, detailed things happening right here.
Daredevil: Born Again Has Other Reasons Why Crossovers Are Tricky
Marvel Comics frequently combines characters from various universes and franchises, but bringing those stories to the screen is much more complicated. Old legal agreements often create major obstacles for potential movies and TV shows, preventing some exciting stories from ever being told.
In its early days, Marvel Studios partnered with various companies to launch what would become a hugely successful movie franchise and a major part of Disney. These early deals have created complications regarding which characters can appear in Marvel films – the Hulk is a key example. Sony’s control over Spider-Man also presents challenges, and it’s a major reason why crossovers with Daredevil are so difficult.
Spider-Man is the character most likely to interact with both Daredevil and Kingpin. Unfortunately, due to complicated agreements with Sony, Spider-Man can’t currently appear in Marvel Studios’ TV shows like Born Again, and characters like Kingpin are restricted from appearing in Marvel Studios films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While renegotiating these contracts is possible, it often proves difficult.

Currently, Daredevil and the adventures in Hell’s Kitchen seem limited to a few TV shows. Hopefully, Marvel will eventually resolve the ownership issues that prevent some stories from being adapted, allowing fans – who support these characters by watching movies and streaming shows – to see their favorite tales come to life.
