The planned sequel to the 1997 action film Face/Off, starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, is facing new challenges. Paramount Pictures first considered a reboot in 2019, but later decided on a direct sequel with Adam Wingard set to direct and co-write. While the project had been moving forward, a recent change in creative direction has now stalled development, leaving its future uncertain.
According to Collider, director Adam Wingard is no longer working on Face/Off 2, leaving the project without a director. The reason for his exit is currently unknown. However, Paramount Pictures hasn’t canceled the film and is still interested in making it. They’ve opened up the directing search, allowing filmmakers to submit their ideas for the sequel – a project that’s been in development for 29 years since the original movie.
Before leaving the project, director Wingard praised the script he and Simon Barrett had written together, calling it fantastic and suggesting it focused on family. However, the project faced major setbacks in 2023 because of the actors’ and writers’ strikes, as both unions fought for fairer contracts and better working conditions. To move forward, Wingard and Barrett brought in another writer to revise the script, intending to revisit and refine it once the new draft was complete.
