I’m so excited about the potential for the next Minecraft Movie! I’ve heard whispers that they’re planning to include a really popular creature from the game that wasn’t in the first film, and I’m really hoping it’s true. It would make the sequel even better!
The 2025 film, A Minecraft Movie, brought the popular sandbox game to a wider audience. The story follows four characters who are unexpectedly transported into the blocky world of Minecraft. While the movie included familiar elements like survival and crafting, many other key features from the game were missing.
Producer Roy Lee recently spoke with ScreenRant about the upcoming horror-thriller Psycho Killer and provided an update on Minecraft 2. When asked about including characters missing from the first movie, Lee confirmed the team intends to feature the Ender Dragon, a popular request from fans.
The Ender Dragon first appeared in Minecraft in 2011 and is often considered the game’s final boss. Players face this challenging creature near the end of their gameplay. True to its name, battling the Ender Dragon signifies the culmination of the game. Players must find a secret stronghold and open a portal to a dimension called The End to encounter it.
The first movie was visually exciting and funny, but fans have pointed out some missing characters. Introducing a massive, threatening monster could really boost the sequel’s story. In the game, facing this cube-shaped monster demands better gear and supplies, hinting at a much bigger conflict in Minecraft 2.
Excited fans received more good news when Lee announced that filming for Minecraft 2 will begin in April. This indicates the movie is already far along in its planning stages, and we might soon learn more about who will be in it and what the story will be about as filming officially starts.
The next Minecraft movie will likely be filmed in New Zealand, continuing the scale of previous films. Despite the first movie receiving mixed reviews (48% on Rotten Tomatoes), Warner Bros. has already announced a sequel because the original earned close to $1 billion globally. A Minecraft Movie 2 is scheduled to come out in July 2027.
Jared Hess, who directed popular comedies like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, is back to direct the sequel. His involvement hints that the new movie will blend exciting action with the quirky humor fans expect. With filming starting soon, producer Lee has all but confirmed that Minecraft: The Movie 2 will feature major parts of the game, including the famous Ender Dragon.
A Minecraft Movie 2 will release in theaters on July 23, 2027.
