Walton Goggins‘ unexpected appearance in the revival miniseries Justified: City Primeval was a delightful surprise. His character, Boyd Crowder, served as the main villain throughout the original Justified series, but he was so charismatic and appealing that viewers loved him almost as much as the show’s protagonist, Raylan Givens.
It’s even more remarkable when you learn it wasn’t the original intention. Walton Goggins’ character, Boyd, was initially supposed to die in the first episode of Justified, but viewers responded so positively that the producers decided to keep him around. The show concluded in 2015, but Timothy Olyphant reprised his role as Raylan Givens for a new version of Elmore Leonard’s City Primeval.
Walton Goggins’ Shock Cameo In Justified: City Primeval Stole The Entire Series
As a longtime fan of Elmore Leonard’s work, I was initially surprised by the character of Raylan Givens – he wasn’t in the original stories! That role was filled by a different detective in the source material. But this 2023 revival of the series really hit the mark with critics, and honestly, seeing Walton Goggins pop up as Boyd in the finale was just icing on the cake. It was a fantastic return.
As a huge fan of Justified, I was completely hooked by the setup for the revival! It jumps forward in time after the original series ended, and we find Raylan Crowder still locked up. They’re moving him to a hospital, supposedly for some kind of sickness, but it quickly becomes clear that’s a trick. Turns out Boyd Crowder has somehow charmed a guard – a real smooth move! – and she helps him escape during the transfer. Their plan? Head south, all the way to Mexico!
Okay, so I was totally shocked when Walton Goggins showed up in Justified: City Primeval! He’d said he wasn’t involved, so it was a real surprise. And honestly? He stepped back into the role of Boyd Crowder like he’d never left. The guy is just so captivating and fun to watch. He absolutely kills it, and manages to basically steal the entire show in just about five minutes of screen time. It was amazing!
Justified: City Primeval’s Lack Of Connections To The Original Show Was A Problem
Watching City Primeval felt strange, like they were testing to see if Raylan would fit into a completely different show. It was definitely enjoyable, but something just felt off. Without the familiar faces and Kentucky backdrop of Justified, it didn’t really feel connected to the original series, even with Raylan there.
Boyd’s return highlighted a key issue: the show was starting to feel like the classic Justified again, with Walton Goggins delivering a memorable performance. This made the season finale’s cliffhanger so compelling, as it suggested a future season that would finally resolve the intense rivalry between Raylan and Boyd.
Justified: City Primeval 2 Still Needs To Happen
Although Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins, and the show’s creators expressed enthusiasm for another season of Justified, there haven’t been any updates since 2023. The cast’s demanding schedules could be the reason, but given the finale hinted at a climactic confrontation, it feels unsatisfying to leave the story unresolved.
The original finale of Justified was highly regarded for providing a satisfying conclusion to the complex relationship between Boyd and Raylan. However, City Primeval seemingly disregarded that carefully crafted ending in favor of a cliffhanger, and the show now needs to deliver on that setup to justify the change.
