Emerald Fennell’s recent adaptation of Wuthering Heights has sparked renewed interest in the novel, reminding many of the humorous literary discussion featured in the TV show Friends.
The newest movie version of the story features Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. Heathcliff is brought into Catherine’s family as a child, and their love story is marked by tragedy.
The movie has sparked a lot of debate because it differs significantly from the original story. Despite the controversy, it’s become a huge commercial success, earning an impressive £7.7 million during the Valentine’s Day weekend.

Ever since the new movie came out, it’s got me thinking about all the different ways Wuthering Heights has been adapted! It’s funny, I even remembered that hilarious Friends episode where Phoebe and Rachel tried to recap the whole story – it was so unexpected and a really weird, but memorable, take on the classic!
In the 1998 episode ‘The One With Ross’s Sandwich,’ Phoebe and Rachel signed up for a literature class. Rachel tried to pass off Phoebe’s interpretation of Wuthering Heights as her own work to impress the class.

Jennifer shared the video on Instagram, jokingly thanking Margot and Jacob for providing entertainment that didn’t require any reading. She added a laughing and eye-rolling emoji to emphasize her point.
Rachel asks Phoebe about the plot of a book she hasn’t read. Phoebe explains it’s a sad love story between Cathy and Heathcliff, set on a bleak and desolate landscape in England. She adds that she believes the setting symbolizes Heathcliff’s untamed nature, and that she understands the use of symbolism in literature.
Viewers immediately started making jokes about how Friends predicted this movie, saying it was exactly what came to mind when they saw the trailer and interviews.

Someone on Instagram pointed out that certain references still feel relevant and powerful even years after they were first made, calling it ‘timeless energy!’
Another added: “So when is Wuthering Heights (Phoebe and Rachel’s Version)?”
After leaving Netflix last year, the popular show Friends has found a new home for UK viewers on a different streaming service.
HBO Max is launching in the UK on March 26th, and when it does, popular sitcom Friends and the new drama series The Pitt will both be available to stream.
Digital Spy rated Wuthering Heights three out of five stars. They noted that while director Emerald Fennell was given creative freedom, the film occasionally felt overly self-indulgent. However, the review also stated that the movie is undeniably engaging, even if frustrating at times, and that Fennell successfully created a film reflecting the intense, skewed view of love often held by teenagers.
You can now see Wuthering Heights in movie theaters. And starting March 26th in the UK, you’ll be able to watch Friends on HBO Max.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant, full-color 100-page tribute to Taylor Swift, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
