Disney+’s Star Wars Animated Future Finally Gets an Exciting Update

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a lot of animated Star Wars content, but that could be changing soon! A well-known animator has reportedly agreed to work on several new Star Wars projects. Animated shows, like The Clone Wars which became popular in the late 2000s, have become just as crucial to the Star Wars story as the live-action films. Now, fans eagerly anticipate new animated releases every year.

Natasha Kline, the creator of Disney’s Primos, is now working with Lucasfilm Animation to develop several new animated Star Wars shows. Like many Star Wars series in recent years, these projects will be made for and streamed on Disney+.

I was really excited to hear that Kiel Kline has renewed her deal with Disney Television Animation! Apparently, this extension means she’ll be heading up the development of all sorts of animated projects – shows, movies, and specials – that will be coming to Disney+. As a huge animation fan, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what she creates for the streaming service.

The report also mentioned a new Star Wars series in the works for Disney Channel, geared towards younger viewers like the show Young Jedi Adventures. This series is believed to be a joint project between Disney Television Animation and Lucasfilm Animation, meaning Kline would probably be in charge of it too.

It’s been a while since Star Wars fans heard about any new animated projects, but that’s changed with this announcement. The last major updates were about a project called Maul: Shadow Lord and a spin-off from Star Wars: Visions called Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, which is expected to come out in 2026.

Besides those two shows, Lucasfilm Animation hadn’t revealed any future animated plans, and there were no rumors or news about any other projects being developed.

Fans might get a new Tales of the… story on May 4th, as that date has become something of an annual release day for the past two years. Last year, all episodes of Tales of the Empire came out on May 4th, 2024, and in 2025, Tales of the Underworld premiered on the same date. Tales of the Underworld was a bit of a surprise – it was announced in April 2025 and released just a month later.

While there’s been talk of a new season of Tales potentially releasing on May 4th, there haven’t been any official announcements or even rumors to confirm this.

What Animated Projects Does Star Wars Need?

The Star Wars universe covers a vast history of tens of thousands of years, offering limitless story potential. However, most of the stories we’ve seen – both from George Lucas and Disney – focus on a relatively short timeframe of about 70 years, ranging from 32 years before the Battle of Yavin to 35 years after it. This period encompasses the main Skywalker family saga.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always known Dave Filoni as the creative force behind all the animated series, and thankfully he’s still going to be heavily involved even with his new role as Lucasfilm co-president. But it sounds like Disney and Lucasfilm are bringing someone new, Kline, on board to handle a lot of the practical, day-to-day work of actually making all these upcoming animated shows – getting them from the idea stage into full production, basically.

Though the Skywalker Saga was thrilling, many fans are eager to see new stories told in different periods of the Star Wars universe. There’s speculation that Lucasfilm and Disney might want Dave Filoni to lead projects focused on a specific timeframe, and the High Republic era would be a perfect setting for an animated series. While there’s already established lore for that period, a TV show could significantly increase its popularity.

If the show did well, it could encourage people who don’t usually read books to check out the High Republic novels.

Star Wars has the potential to grow by making animated series that take place in galaxies beyond the one we’re familiar with. The show Ahsoka has already established that other galaxies exist and are accessible. If a creator like Kline were to tell stories in a new galaxy, they’d have complete creative freedom without needing to worry about contradicting established storylines.
