Nia DaCosta, director of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, recently discussed a major plot twist in the new sequel. The film picks up where the previous movies left off in its post-apocalyptic world, and a particularly memorable moment involves the character Samson, played by Chi Lewis-Parry.
The movie follows the infected Alpha leader and Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) as they attempt to develop a cure for the Rage Virus using antipsychotic medications.

Later, when attacked by infected people, Samson discovers he’s somehow immune to the virus. However, he then finds Kelson has been fatally stabbed by Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell). Although the doctor’s knowledge might be lost with his death, Samson might be able to recall enough to recreate the discovery.
DaCosta has spoken about the recent changes and whether they’re caused by the drugs used or represent a lasting shift, implying the situation is complex. She also confirmed that a third film is planned.
I recently discussed this with writer Alex Garland, and I’m hesitant to share too much detail right now,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I have a clear idea of how I handled it in the film, and I don’t want to say anything I might have to take back later.
The director hinted that the character isn’t completely healed, but the progress he has made is lasting. He’s changed significantly from how he was at the beginning of the story, though it’s unclear if he’s fully integrated with the others. He’s definitely not the same person he used to be.
When further pressed on whether it is “something in between”, DaCosta replied with an affirmative.
Since it came out, The Bone Temple has been highly praised by critics, earning a 93% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
