Sam Thompson shares surgery update after revealing he’s having vocal cord surgery to remove a cyst caused by ‘shouting too much’

Sam Thompson recently gave an update on his recovery after surgery to remove a cyst from his vocal cords. He previously joked that the cyst developed from excessive shouting.

The 33-year-old former star of Made In Chelsea updated her fans on Instagram Wednesday about how her procedure went.

Posting a selfie from home, he wrote: ‘Day 1 of no speaking… I am so bored.

‘Although I am LOVING seeing all the cat memes you’re sending!!’

This happened after Sam posted videos to his Instagram Story on Tuesday, showing himself in a hospital gown before the medical procedure.

He shared in a video that he’s undergoing surgery on his vocal cords to remove a cyst that doctors have known about for some time.

‘It’s because I talk to much and shout too loudly and I keep losing my voice really easily.

They’re going to remove it with surgery, and I’ll be put under anesthesia for the first time. I’m pretty anxious about it, as I don’t like the feeling of being out of control.

He lightheartedly mentioned that his 33-year-old self would be getting a ride home from his sister Louise after the operation.

Louise updated everyone on her son’s condition while on her way to pick him up. She explained he wouldn’t be able to speak for three days after the procedure, which she knew would be difficult for him because he’s usually so playful and chatty.

Sam is having surgery after recently revealing his Valentine’s Day plans to his girlfriend, Talitha Balinska. He’d hoped to take her on a ski trip, but those plans fell through.

He started dating the model in September after his split from Zara McDermott in 2024.

Last month, Sam deepened their relationship by finally telling Talitha he loved her.

On Monday’s episode of his podcast, Staying Relevant, Sam confessed to feeling nervous about his first Valentine’s Day with Talitha, sharing his plans for the special occasion with his friend Pete Wicks.

I’m so excited to hear about Sam’s plans for the day! He’s keeping things really sweet and personal – he wants to give her a card and some roses himself, and then cook her a cozy dinner at home with wine. It sounds absolutely perfect and so thoughtful of him!

He had planned a Valentine’s Day surprise for Talitha after a romantic ski trip he’d mentioned on his podcast became impossible due to work.

“To be honest, I’m not a big fan of gifts for Valentine’s Day,” Sam explained. “I think it shouldn’t be all about presents. I’d prefer roses – not too many, because that feels over the top – but a thoughtful bunch would be perfect.”

‘Red roses, or maybe a bit of mixed actually white and a red, two dozen.’

Pete noted that white roses traditionally represent ‘purity and innocence,’ which is a different message than the ‘passion’ usually associated with Valentine’s Day.

Okay, so I was chatting with Sam the other day, and he admitted he’s totally lost when it comes to dinner! He was really honest and said he needs a little guidance – he trusts my cooking know-how and feels confident I can pull something delicious together. It’s so refreshing when someone admits they need a hand in the kitchen, right?

I’m picturing a romantic evening with you, Pete. I’m thinking roses, a nice dinner, and we could come back to my place. I want to cook something a little different, maybe even a fondue – something a bit creative and unusual.

‘I’m not good at this but I’m really going to try. Do I dress up? Do I put something on?’

Okay, so just imagine if they weren’t together, right? I’d be right there, personally delivering a card – a beautiful card. And it wouldn’t just be a card, oh no. It would have roses, of course, and then… I’d just lean in and kiss her. I mean, I’d have to. It’s what she deserves, and honestly, what I’d be thinking the whole time.

The card will be short but heartfelt, and I’m hoping it’s nicely handwritten. Please deliver it with the roses, give her a kiss, and tell her I’ll see her tonight.

I’m planning a relaxed evening with some music and a couple glasses of wine – probably a Rioja, since that’s the only kind I’m familiar with. I’ll be cooking dinner, and we’ll just enjoy being together in the kitchen. I’m aiming for something simple and not too elaborate.

I was really touched by what Sam shared about the upcoming celebration. He admitted he was actually quite anxious, saying it felt scary. He explained it’s that feeling of wanting to be a good boyfriend and worrying about messing everything up – that ‘what if I get it all wrong?’ feeling. It was so relatable and honest of him to share that.

‘I don’t want to f*** it up, especially first Valentine’s Day.’

Sam had previously told Pete about his idea for a romantic ski trip for Talitha, but he confessed that they ultimately didn’t go.

When asked how it went, I have to admit Sam sounded really disappointed. He explained he just couldn’t make it happen, that it never really got off the ground. He said it was something he’d hoped for, but agents and work commitments quickly put an end to the idea. It was a real shame to hear, honestly.

‘Luckily I didn’t tell her. It was a pipe dream that started and ended in this studio.’

Last month, Sam confided in Pete that he’d told Talitha he loves her while they were relaxing on the sofa. He admitted he’d felt this way for a while but found it difficult to actually say it out loud.

The presenter had a tough beginning to 2025 after his breakup with Zara. However, things turned around thanks to a new relationship, a hugely successful concert at London’s O2 Arena, and a major accomplishment for charity, allowing him to finish the year strong.
