How did the initial CFB 25 ratings turn out?

Now that the 2024-25 college football season is over, we can see how well the original player and team ratings held up. These ratings were adjusted throughout the season, even leading up to the release of the next version of the game, but this article focuses on the initial ratings as they were first released.

The team rankings generally align with expectations, featuring strong programs from the SEC, Big Ten, and ACC in the top 10 and 25. However, the rankings incorrectly predicted the University of Georgia would win the 2024-25 college football season; the Ohio State Buckeyes were the actual champions. Georgia actually had a difficult playoff run, losing to Notre Dame, who finished as the runner-up and were ranked 90th overall.

Looking at the ratings, Alabama’s 92 seems a bit generous considering their disappointing season. Oregon, despite going undefeated and winning their conference, received a surprisingly low rating of 90. Boise State came in at 82, and might have been rated higher if star running back Ashton Jeanty hadn’t been limited.

The early rankings in CFB 25 show us that anything can happen in college football. Highly-ranked teams don’t always stay on top, and teams expected to struggle could surprisingly make a run for the championship.
