Fans were surprised last week to learn that Celeste Barber and her husband, Api Robin, are separating after two decades of marriage.
Although many were surprised by their divorce, looking back at old interviews and what they shared online shows there had been problems in their marriage for quite some time.
Recently, Api and Celeste haven’t been interacting on social media at all, and their last picture together was posted in early November.
The Australian performer had finished the American portion of her Backup Dancer tour, with her partner, Api, joining her and sharing affectionate updates about their travels online.
Celeste began her tour in late October, and videos showed Api visiting her behind the scenes, where he shared how proud he was of her growing success.
Their last social media post as a couple appeared in early November, shortly after they finished their US tour and returned to Australia.
On November 1st, Celeste posted a collection of photos and videos from their trip, showcasing the couple enjoying events and cozying up together, looking incredibly happy.
The next day, Api posted something similar, and it seemed even more affectionate. He expressed how ‘proud’ he was of his wife.
To make the post even more playful, he included the song “Walking On A Dream” by Empire of the Sun.
Since then, they’ve both avoided mentioning each other on social media. Api even updated his profile to say ‘formerly hot husband’, signaling a change in their relationship.
Christmas and New Year passed by without the couple’s typical affectionate posts and celebrations, which was surprising considering how often they share glimpses of their life together online.
Everyone wondered if Celeste and Api would publicly show their love on Valentine’s Day, as fans were closely watching for any sign of affection between them.
Just when everyone thought Saint Valentine would be the first to announce a breakup, Api surprised everyone by revealing on February 13th that he and Celeste had separated.
Their relationship began to struggle in 2020, during the Covid lockdowns, when Celeste confessed she worried their marriage wouldn’t survive.
The online personality shared on Jameela Jamil’s iWeigh podcast that the COVID-19 pandemic created difficulties in their relationship.
Celeste explained that the lockdowns altered their relationship because they’d gotten used to having space and hadn’t been spending much time together before.
It’s been challenging, and continues to be. With the lockdown, he’s constantly around, and it feels like having two very strong-willed people in the house,” the actress said with a laugh.
Celeste explained to her well-known friend that she’s very mindful about what she shares online regarding her marriage and family, only posting things after careful consideration.
‘Most of the time it can be not f***ing pretty – marriage is hard,’ she honestly expressed.
Celeste described a huge argument they had during lockdown that made her believe their relationship was over. Fortunately, Api helped them see things clearly and work through it.
‘We are very lucky, we just absolutely love each other,’ she said.
Api explained their recent tensions stemmed from the pandemic, noting that they weren’t used to being around each other so much. He was glad to hear him acknowledge it.
Celeste shared that when she argues with Api, she reminds herself how heartbroken she’d be if anything happened to him, and that helps her calm down and stop the fight.
She also turned to treadmill workouts and screaming into pillows after fights.
As a lifestyle observer, I’ve noticed Celeste has completely stepped away from the internet since her breakup with Api. She hasn’t said anything publicly about what happened, and remains very private right now.
She last posted on February 8th, excitedly sharing about her hosting job at the AACTA Awards and photos of herself enjoying time with her celebrity friends behind the scenes.
Api was notably absent from the images.
The tree care expert and business owner revealed their separation last week, posting the news on Instagram the evening before Valentine’s Day.
He started a post, titled ‘Heavy hearts,’ by saying the last few months have been very difficult and sad for him and whoever he’s referring to.
‘After much reflection, the decision has been made to separate.
We still care about each other and have a lot of respect, but we’ve realized we’re at different points in our lives and want different things, so we’ve decided to go our separate ways.
Our children’s health and happiness are our main concern. We appreciate your respect for our privacy during this difficult time.
Celeste, a 21-year-old bartender in Sydney, met Api in 2006. They later married in Bali in 2013.
Api had two daughters, Sahra and Kyah, who were two and four years old when she met her current partner. They were from a previous relationship.
Celeste and Api are also parents to two sons, Lou, age 14, and Buddy, age 11. They’ve been living in Tweed Heads for the past six years.
In April of last year, they sold their house on the Central Coast of New South Wales for $1.045 million. They had purchased the property 11 years prior for $565,000.
