At age 38, Hilary Duff is now beginning to make music out of the painful memories from her past.
Tegan and Sara’s new album, ‘Luck… or Something,’ features several songs that appear to reveal details about the difficult relationships she has with her sister, Haylie, and their father, Robert Duff.
Hilary recently shared some personal thoughts in an interview with Glamour, explaining that family ties don’t always guarantee a lasting relationship.
She explained that family are the people who have the biggest impact on your life, simply because they’re the ones you’re born into and naturally spend the most time with.
Family isn’t always permanent, even though you’re born into one. You can only manage your own actions and perspective. My life and my parents’ relationship have been complex, but that’s not unusual. I think that’s why I’m only sharing this now – I finally felt prepared to talk about it.
Hilary’s parents endured a messy divorce that saw her father arrested for contempt of court.
In 2008, Robert was arrested because he reportedly sold family property during his divorce without getting approval from a court, as reported by The Daily News.
In her song ‘Optimist,’ Hilary expresses a longing to be able to sleep on airplanes and, more deeply, to feel truly loved by her father.
For years, there have been rumors of a rift between Hilary and her sister. They haven’t been seen together in photos since 2019 and don’t seem to interact much online.
The track fittingly titled We Don’t Talk is thought to be about Haylie.
‘Don’t know when it happened / Not even sure what it was about,’ the Lizzie McGuire star sings.
She strongly hints the song is about Haylie by singing, ‘Because we share the same background and family.’
Hilary shared that people often ask about how things are going with someone. She admits she wants to say everything is great, but honestly, she’s not sure. What she usually ends up saying is that they’ve stopped communicating – they don’t talk about anything anymore.
She then alludes to her Napoleon Dynamite star sister possibly being ‘jealous’ of her.
She sings, offering to give up everything and share the best parts with someone if jealousy is the reason for their unhappiness.
Hilary then made a heartfelt plea, asking herself and Haylie to finally resolve their differences and work through their problems.
She sings about wanting to resolve their issues – to really talk things through and understand each other. She wishes they could recapture the easy connection they had as children, and expresses frustration with their current silence and sadness, wanting to finally address what’s wrong instead of avoiding it.
Although Hilary hasn’t said for sure if her new song is about her sister, many fans online believe it is.
One fan commented that Hilary Duff’s recent performance of “We Don’t Talk” seems to be directed at her sister, Haylie, but in a hopeful way – essentially an invitation for Haylie to reconnect.
Someone else commented that they didn’t understand why the people involved couldn’t simply call each other and discuss the issue, as there seemed to be a clear path for communication.
