Throughout the first half of February 2026, Netflix launched several new thriller series, but season 2 of In the Mud has received the most praise from critics. This season continues the story started in 2025 and expands on the world of the popular crime drama El Marginal.
“In the Mud” (also known as “En el barro”) is an Argentine series on Netflix. It’s set in a women’s prison and centers around Gladys Guerra, the wife of a famous gang leader, Mario Borges. She’s sent to maximum security prison after a kidnapping attempt goes wrong.
While the new series, In the Mud, has a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than El Marginal – which ran for five seasons from 2016 to 2022 – many viewers actually prefer El Marginal. The original series received a remarkable 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.1 rating on IMDb, whereas In the Mud currently has a 6.3 on IMDb.
Ultimately, In the Mud wouldn’t exist without El Marginal, and the two shows make a great pairing. If you enjoy dark, realistic prison dramas like Mayor of Kingstown, both are essential viewing on Netflix.
