Millie Mackintosh has shared how she’s discovered the joy of being alone and prioritizing her own needs, especially after her recent, surprising separation from her husband, Hugo Taylor.
Former Made In Chelsea star, 36, discussed rediscovering herself after becoming sober in a recent appearance on the A Millennial Mind podcast.
She described giving up alcohol as a turning point that led her to rethink her identity and rediscover her interests, saying it felt like starting fresh and letting go of her old self.
Millie explained that she’s finally comfortable with who she is, enjoys spending time alone, and is starting to become the person she’s always wanted to be.
She expressed optimism about the future, explaining that she’s recently begun prioritizing her own needs and happiness, following her split from Hugo, 39, after seven years of marriage.
Looking back on getting sober, she feels the biggest benefit has been learning to love and understand herself. She says it’s allowed her to finally become the person she always wanted to be.
It’s been a huge change, like I had to completely let go of my old self to begin again. I really had to rediscover who I am, what I enjoy, and what my life looks like without alcohol, and that was pretty frightening at first.
She went on to explain that she doesn’t always appear as confident as she seems. In reality, she’s a sensitive and introverted person with ADHD, easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation. She actually prefers quiet gatherings, relaxing evenings at home, spending time with her dog, and having fun with her children – not a life of wild parties.
Understanding and accepting yourself is key, because the most important relationship you’ll ever have is with yourself. When I was struggling with alcohol, I really disliked who I was. I felt a lot of shame and self-hatred.
Millie openly discussed her struggles with binge drinking, which began when she was young. She wrote about her path to getting sober in her book, Bad Drunk, after giving up alcohol in the summer of 2022.
She openly shared that learning to love herself was a continuous process, but the most valuable part had been discovering the joy of spending time alone.
I’m still learning to be comfortable with who I am,” she explained. “It’s a process of self-discovery, learning to enjoy my own company and being happy when I’m alone.
Learning to be comfortable with my own thoughts, so being alone isn’t painful, feels like the greatest achievement.
Even though her marriage recently ended, the reality star said she’s optimistic about the future and becoming a more confident and appealing person.
She described how prioritizing your own well-being can be transformative. When you begin to value yourself and make choices that support your needs, you naturally attract different, more positive experiences. She emphasized that self-respect is a key part of this process.
It’s like you suddenly become incredibly appealing and draw people to you, fulfilling what they’re looking for. I’m really optimistic about what’s to come.
Millie and Hugo announced they were separating on February 2nd, ending their seven-year marriage. They share two daughters together, Sienna, age five, and Aurelia, age four.
People familiar with the situation say the couple is dedicated to raising their young children together and creating a supportive family environment, and that their children remain their main focus.
The couple first became romantically involved while appearing on the reality show Made In Chelsea as teenagers, and they had been married since June 2018.
Millie and Hugo have decided to separate, according to a source who spoke with the Daily Mail.
After knowing each other for a long time, they recently had some difficult conversations about their future and have decided to separate.
Their children and family are the most important things to them, and they never wanted to separate.
Honestly, I’m just devastated, but from what I’ve gathered, they’re trying to figure out what life will be like if they’re not together anymore. It’s all about figuring out how to raise their little ones, even if they’re not a couple. It breaks my heart, but I guess they’re trying to do what’s best for the kids, even if it means splitting up.
The beginning of the year has been really challenging, and they’re hoping to keep dealing with things privately.
Last month, Millie went to India for a wellness retreat focused on calming and restoring the nervous system, while Hugo enjoyed a ski trip.
Okay, so she’s here and everyone’s noticed she wasn’t wearing her ring! It’s driving me crazy! And she’s been posting these cryptic things online, hinting at a fresh start… like, is this happening?! I’m totally convinced something big is going on and she’s about to completely reinvent herself. I’m glued to her social media, honestly. This is HUGE!
She also posted a quote that read: ‘You don’t always have to know what comes next in your journey.
It’s important to simply accept where you are in life and be comfortable with it. There’s a real beauty in self-acceptance, right now, in this very moment.
Whatever your goals are, remember that enjoying today is just as crucial as working towards the future.
She also posted a quote to her Instagram story that read, ‘And then the moon said to me, dear girl, it’s time to embrace your strength.’
Millie and Hugo first connected when she was a teenager, and their romantic relationship began when she turned 21. They both became well-known while appearing on the E4 reality show.
After dating for six months, their relationship ended in 2011 when she suspected he was having an affair with her close friend and colleague, Rosie Fortescue.
Millie once said she would always have feelings for Hugo. In an interview, she explained, ‘I really did love him, and that doesn’t just vanish, but I have to keep reminding myself of the reasons we broke up.’
I believe that whenever I see him for the rest of my life, I’ll still feel butterflies in my stomach. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop that feeling.
After inheriting the Quality Street chocolate company, she gained further public attention through her marriage to rapper Professor Green, whose real name is Stephen Manderson, in 2013.
After being married for 30 months, the couple announced they were separating in February 2016. However, Millie and Hugo later started dating again that same year.
They got married two years after they first met and had their first daughter, Sienna, in 2020. Aurelia followed a year later, in 2021.
