Glen Powell Teases His New Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot & Whether He’ll Play Leatherface

Glen Powell is buzzing about his upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre began in 1974 and has since grown into a nine-film series centered around the terrifying Leatherface and his cannibalistic family in Texas. Recently, A24 purchased the rights to the franchise and announced plans to develop a television series. JT Mollner, who wrote the screenplay for The Long Walk, will be the showrunner, and Glen Powell, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, will serve as an executive producer.

Glen Powell recently spoke with Variety while promoting his new film, How to Make a Killing. He hinted at exciting things to come with the Texas Chainsaw series, and when asked if he might even play Leatherface, he said anything is possible. However, his current plan is to be heavily involved behind the scenes as a producer, rather than in front of the camera as an actor.

I believe The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a truly groundbreaking horror film – it really set the standard for the genre and perfectly captures the atmosphere of its time. Similarly, A24 is a production company consistently creating unique and memorable movies.

I recently spoke with the rights holders, JT Mollner and other creatives involved, and they’re incredibly enthusiastic about the project. Everyone has a clear vision and genuinely cares about making it great – I especially do! I’m confident we’re going to create something truly special. It took a while to get to this point, but I’m excited about what’s ahead and believe it will be a lot of fun.

It’s hard to say if I’ll act in the movie, or even take on the role of Leatherface. Right now, it looks like my production company, Barnstorm, will be producing it, but I plan to be heavily involved in the project.

It always seemed like a strange fit for Glen Powell to play Leatherface, given the character doesn’t speak and is usually much larger than him. Still, having some role in the film could be a nice bookend to Powell’s career.

Although Powell first gained recognition playing Chad Radwell in the horror-comedy series Scream Queens, he hasn’t appeared in any horror projects since that show ended in 2016. A role in the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre inspired film could be a fun way for him to acknowledge the genre that launched his career.

Even if Powell doesn’t appear in the project, he’s committed to being actively involved as a producer, which will significantly expand his work behind the scenes. Previously, most of the projects he’s produced or executive produced also featured him as an actor, like the film Hit Man and the Hulu series Chad Powers.

His decision to take a behind-the-scenes role in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise might mean he’ll focus on producing more films with diverse casts, in addition to his acting roles in upcoming projects like the J.J. Abrams sci-fi film The Great Beyond and a new comedy from Judd Apatow.
