Be warned: this article reveals significant spoilers for episode 5 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, titled “In the Name of the Mother.” The episode includes a shocking character death that, much like Ned Stark’s death in Game of Thrones, will dramatically alter the direction of the story.
The first season reaches a critical point in episode 5 with the Trial of Seven, where Dunk (Peter Claffey) fights to prove his innocence. He defeats Prince Aerion (Finn Bennett), who then drops his claim that Dunk attacked him. However, the biggest surprise comes when Prince Baelor (Bertie Carvel) is found with a deadly wound after the trial.
The fourth episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms received the highest ratings of any Game of Thrones episode in years. A key moment was Baelor Targaryen’s choice to support Dunk, even though he knew his nephew was acting wrongly, as Dunk intervened to stop Aerion from hurting an innocent person. This scene, similar to much of the previous episode, explores the qualities that define a true knight.
Bertie Carvel, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, discussed the significance of honor in the deaths of both Ned Stark and Baelor Targaryen. He explained that the Stark family builds its identity and story around strong moral principles and a sense of duty – a response to the looming threat of ‘Winter is Coming.’ He noted a parallel with the Targaryens, who express this concept in different terms, but ultimately share a similar core value.
According to showrunner Ira Parker, Baelor Targaryen understood the risks of his actions but deliberately chose to confront them. Parker explained that unlike Ned Stark, Baelor wasn’t naive; he was acting in accordance with the expectations placed upon him since childhood, referencing his early nickname, ‘the hammer and the anvil.’
Ned Stark’s death is a pivotal moment in Game of Thrones, fueling the ongoing conflict because the Starks will never forget the Lannisters’ cruelty. Ned, despite his strong principles, falsely confesses to crimes hoping to save his family, only to be executed by Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) anyway, leaving everyone stunned.
Baelor’s death hit me hard, and I know it will affect everyone for a long time. He was next in line for the Iron Throne, and it felt like the realm really needed someone like him – someone who genuinely cared about doing what was right and took his duty seriously. Personally, I’m devastated. He did so much for me, and he represented everything I admired about being a knight. It’s a huge loss.
The deaths during the Trial of Seven will likely inspire Dunk to raise the bar for knights across Westeros, and he and Aegon, nicknamed “Egg,” will share a lasting connection because of what they’ve experienced. With only one episode left in the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the characters will have to deal with the aftermath of these events, which will shape the direction of the show going forward.
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will conclude with its final episode becoming available on HBO and HBO Max on February 22, 2026.
