I’m totally hooked on this new show, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast! It’s from the same person who made Derry Girls, and it’s already shot to the top of Netflix’s trending charts in the UK – it’s officially number one right now. It only came out on Thursday, February 12th, but it’s quickly become the most popular series on the platform, at least as of today!
We described the show as a more mature version of Derry Girls. It follows three female friends who are haunted by a secret from their past. They reunite to investigate the unexpected and puzzling death of another friend they haven’t seen for a long time.
The main actors in ‘How to Get to Heaven from Belfast’ are Sinéad Keenan, known for ‘Unforgotten’, Roisin Gallagher from ‘The Dry’, Caoilfhionn Dunne who starred in ‘A Thousand Blows’, and Natasha O’Keeffe of ‘Misfits’.

Honestly, the cast is incredible! Besides the main characters, you’ve got some seriously talented actors like Darragh Hand, who I loved in Heartstopper, Bronagh Gallagher from Brassic, Emmett J Scanlan who’s great in Kin, Michelle Fairley – you probably know her from Gangs of London – Josh Finan (The Responder), and even Ardal O’Hanlon, who’s hilarious in Death in Paradise. They all really bring their characters to life.
The new murder mystery is a hit with viewers, and many have already seen it since it came out.

Viewers on IMDb are praising the show, with one calling it “genuinely first-rate TV.” Another fan gave it a perfect 10/10 score, describing it as dark, funny, and captivating.
Critics have also given ‘How to Get to Heaven from Belfast’ high marks, with a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Digital Spy gave the show four stars, calling it unusual and unpredictable at first, but ultimately ‘brilliant’ once you embrace its unique style.
The Daily Mail praised the story as a well-crafted detective tale with humorous moments and a fantastic soundtrack. TIME magazine noted that even if you don’t usually enjoy mysteries, the author’s clever take on the genre, combined with her talent for comedy, dialogue, and character building, makes it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Despite its comedic moments, the film deeply examines the bonds of female friendship and the lasting impact of trauma, according to The Times. Meanwhile, Independent described it as a wildly fun and energetic adventure that playfully blends different film styles.
Lisa McGee, the writer behind shows like Derry Girls and How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, described her new series to BBC News as a comedic murder mystery. She explained that the main characters will find themselves caught up in a spooky and unsettling journey that spans Ireland and other locations.
While How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is a new story, distinct from the popular Channel 4 series Derry Girls, Saoirse-Monica Jackson makes a memorable appearance, and fans of Derry Girls will spot a special reference in the final episode.
How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is streaming now on Netflix.
