Ethan Hawke & Margaret Qualley’s Blue Moon Has Officially Landed on Netflix

Margaret Qualley has become known for her roles in emotionally powerful films and TV shows. In the 2025 biographical comedy Blue Moon, she shares the screen with Ethan Hawke, and together they create a truly special cinematic experience. Directed by Richard Linklater, the film tells the bittersweet story of Lorenz Hart (Hawke), a famous Broadway lyricist, and his mentee, Elizabeth (Qualley), focusing on the later part of Hart’s life.

After a successful run in theaters starting in October 2025 and receiving nominations for major awards like the Academy Award and Golden Globe, many people were eager to watch Linklater’s acclaimed film online. Now, fans can stream Blue Moon on Netflix starting February 14, 2026.

In the US, you can only watch the movie with a Netflix Standard or Premium subscription. It won’t be available on the Standard with Ads plan.

The movie primarily takes place over one night in a dimly lit New York bar, on March 31st, 1943. It centers around Hart, who is struggling to come to terms with his declining popularity.

Having just seen the huge success of the musical Oklahoma!, written by his old collaborator Richard Rodgers, Hart watched as Rodgers received enthusiastic praise at the afterparty. Despite feeling overlooked himself, Hart was determined to pursue a relationship with Elizabeth, a Yale student he’d connected with earlier.

Ethan Hawke Gives A Dazzling Performance In Blue Moon

Bringing a real person to life on stage is incredibly challenging, and this actor brilliantly portrays Broadway legend Lorenzo Hart. They strike a perfect balance between Hart’s humor and inner turmoil, and his sharp intelligence and self-sabotaging behavior, all without being overly dramatic. The performance was a resounding success.

Hart was a pessimistic man who passed away just a year after the successful debut of Oklahoma!. As his career on Broadway declined, it became evident he deeply desired connection and affection, but struggled with increasing alcohol abuse.

Despite dealing with serious themes, Blue Moon isn’t a depressing film – it has plenty of lighthearted moments. It’s a close-up, conversation-based story that really lets its three main actors stand out, alongside appearances from real people like E.B. White. The movie focuses on a single night in one man’s life, but it effectively shows the impact of a long career and the sadness of fading from relevance in a fickle business.

Ethan Hawke delivers a compelling performance as a struggling artist in Blue Moon, making it a great choice for Broadway enthusiasts interested in the people who shaped the industry. But even if you don’t typically follow Broadway, you’ll likely appreciate director Richard Linklater’s skillful and character-focused approach to filmmaking.

Blue Moon is available to stream on Netflix.
