Daniel Radcliffe became famous for playing Harry Potter in eight films between 2001 and 2011. He was first noticed by director Chris Columbus during the filming of David Copperfield. The Harry Potter movies have earned over $7 billion globally, and now HBO is creating a new TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s books.
Daniel Radcliffe recently talked to Rolling Stone about a funny Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Finn Wolfhard as Harry Potter and Ben Marshall as Ron Weasley. The sketch, called Heated Wizardry, playfully combined elements of Harry Potter with the popular docuseries Heated Rivalry, which follows a gay hockey league. Radcliffe shared his thoughts on the sketch and how it reimagined his famous character in a surprising new way.
It’s so funny, I actually bumped into Finn Wolfhard a few weeks earlier, totally by chance, and we had a nice little chat. Then, the day before the sketch aired, he texted me out of the blue to let me know they were doing a Harry Potter bit! I probably didn’t get all the references, but it was genuinely hilarious and really sweet. I always love seeing different takes on Harry Potter – it just makes me laugh!
Daniel Radcliffe wasn’t the only one to react positively to the sketch, which quickly became popular online. It cleverly combined elements from two well-known franchises, and its release shortly after Finn Wolfhard finished his ten-year run on Stranger Things added to the buzz. Wolfhard played Mike Wheeler in the hugely successful Netflix series, which concluded with a final season that sparked a lot of debate. While the original series has ended, the Stranger Things universe will continue with spin-offs and a stage prequel.
Daniel Radcliffe became well-known after starring in the Harry Potter films, and has since built a career choosing interesting and often independent projects, alongside successful stage work. He’s appeared in films like The Woman in Black, Kill Your Darlings, Imperium, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and The Lost City. In 2024, he won a Tony Award for his performance in Merrily We Roll Along. He’s currently filming a role as Arthur Tobin in the upcoming series The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins.
Whether Finn Wolfhard will host Saturday Night Live again is unknown, but his recent performance was so well-received that people are eager to see what he does next.
