Margot Robbie revealed that her Australian accent was considered too strong, even for the popular Australian TV show, Neighbours.
Prime Video has shared a clip of the Queensland-born actress’s original accent, before she perfected her British pronunciation.
A TikTok video this week featured Margot, known for her role as Donna Freedman, performing her lines with a strong Australian accent.
‘Everyone’s already left!’ she cries out in the clip, in which she is wearing a bridesmaid’s dress.
Oh my god, when she said ‘Are you kidding me?’ – that accent! It’s SO undeniably Margot, that thick Australian lilt just gets me every time. And she was saying her taxi was going to take a full hour! An hour! I could practically feel her frustration, it was amazing.
Fans in the comments section were quick to poke fun at Margot’s pronunciation.

Someone joked, “Did he say ‘an ouwwher?’ (meaning ‘an hour’)?” Another person added, with disbelief, “And this was after he worked with a dialogue coach!”
Someone commented that the way she says “I am” is incredibly moving, even for an Australian. Another person responded with enthusiastic disbelief, writing “OH NO!”
Margot Robbie, known for her role in Barbie, recently shared that when she was cast as Donna Freedman in 2008, producers asked her to lessen her strong Australian accent.
She recently told Graham Norton that she hasn’t attempted an Australian accent since her time on the show ‘Neighbours’.
‘This isn’t as Queensland. My accent used to be so strong.’
Margot continued: ‘They got a dialect coach for me because I was too Australian for Neighbours.
You know, it’s funny, I honestly didn’t realize I had an accent until someone pointed it out! I remember being genuinely confused and asking them what they meant. It’s amazing how we can sometimes be unaware of things about ourselves, even something as noticeable as how we speak. I was showing them my natural way of speaking, and it just struck me how subjective perception can be!
The star explained that she worked with a dialect coach to tone down her natural speech.
Honestly, the feedback was pretty harsh! People told me my speaking style was really difficult to listen to. So, they decided to pair me with a vocal coach – a woman they thought could help me refine my accent and overall delivery. It was definitely a wake-up call, but ultimately, I think it was a good thing.
Before becoming a household name in Hollywood, I watched Margot Robbie really hone her skills on Australian TV. She became incredibly popular thanks to her role on the iconic soap opera Neighbours – it was a huge show for 40 years before sadly wrapping up in 2025, but it definitely launched a lot of careers, including hers!
Robbie was first on the show from 2008 to 2011, appearing in over 350 episodes.
In 2008, she made appearances on the Australian TV series City Homicide and Review With Myles Barlow. However, since gaining recognition in 2013, she’s mainly concentrated on working in films.
Her latest major film is a new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s iconic novel Wuthering Heights.
