After reaching an incredible 800 episodes, people are starting to wonder how much longer The Simpsons will continue. While all shows eventually end, showrunner Matt Selman has hinted that when the time comes, there likely won’t be a grand finale episode – the show will simply stop being renewed.
In an interview with The Wrap, celebrating a recent achievement for the show, Selman addressed questions about whether The Simpsons was planning a grand finale.
About a year and a half ago, we created an episode that jokingly imitated typical series finales. We threw in every possible way a show could end, which was our way of saying we wouldn’t actually have a series finale. We essentially did a finale mid-season, poking fun at the idea of neatly wrapping things up or ending the show altogether.
The show is designed to be unchanging, with the characters essentially starting fresh each week. It’s similar to the movie Groundhog Day, but the characters aren’t aware of the loop and don’t face life-or-death situations. If the show were to end, it wouldn’t have a grand finale – just a typical episode featuring the family, maybe with a few subtle hints that it’s the end, but no big emotional farewells.

When The Simpsons first aired as a standalone show in December 1989, it was a fresh, innovative, and unique addition to television. After four decades, many copycat shows have appeared and disappeared, but The Simpsons is still going strong, aiming for the ambitious goal of reaching its 1000th episode – a milestone the show’s creators are determined to achieve.
Even though the show has faced challenges, The Simpsons is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. This has led to a dedicated channel on Disney+ and plans for a new movie in 2027. While some believe the series should end before its quality declines, it continues to attract a global audience, both with new episodes and in reruns.

The 800th episode, titled “Irrational Treasure,” premieres on Sunday, February 15th at 8 PM Eastern and Pacific time. R&B group Boys II Men will be featured, performing a fresh take on the show’s iconic theme song. The episode also stars Kevin Bacon, Quinta Brunson, Questlove from The Roots, and Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, and Taylor Dearden from The Pitt, who provide voices for a doctor, nurse, and intern, respectively.
