Hamnet star Jessie Buckley shares behind the scenes secrets on the Shakespeare epic – as she gears up for the BAFTAs after clean sweep during awards season

Jessie Buckley shared a sneak peek at her work in the film Hamnet with an exclusive clip, as she prepares to attend the BAFTAs next week.

Okay, seriously, she’s been sweeping the awards season! Every single nomination she’s gotten, she’s won! And everyone’s saying – everyone – that she’s absolutely going to take home Best Actress on Sunday. I just know it, and I’m so excited I can barely stand it!

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following the buzz around this beautiful new film, and it’s truly deserving of all the praise it’s getting. It tells the incredibly moving story of William Shakespeare and the loss of his son, Hamnet, and it’s been captivating audiences since it came out last month.

The film has already won major awards at the Golden Globes and is expected to be a frontrunner at the upcoming BAFTAs and Oscars.

Jessie, age 36, has received significant acclaim for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare, the central character, and for depicting her emotional journey through the life and death of her son.

The movie shows how this loss impacts her family and, in turn, influences the writing of Shakespeare’s famous play, Hamlet.

A new video released before the event features cast members, like Jessie, revealing fun facts and stories from making the movie.

Jessie was deeply impressed by the reconstructed Globe Theatre. She described walking inside as an overwhelming and profoundly moving experience, connecting visitors to something fundamental about the human spirit.

Paul Mescal, who acted alongside her as Shakespeare, said the set design – particularly the painted backdrop and overall stage appearance – felt remarkably genuine and special.

Chloé Zhao, the director, explained her goal for the production was to capture the feeling of Shakespeare’s famous line, ‘All the world’s a stage.’

We always envisioned the film as visually striking and deliberate. Everything was shot head-on and carefully arranged with balance, almost like a theatrical set – the idea being that the entire world is a stage.

Oh my gosh, you guys, Pippa, the executive producer, just said that the Globe they built is absolutely unreal! She was practically gushing about the design team – she said they created something that feels totally, completely real. It’s just… incredible, honestly. The level of detail and work they put into it is mind-blowing!

This model is about three-quarters the size of Earth, and we meticulously constructed its ground floor and one story above. It was truly a beautiful creation.

I’ve been absolutely blown away watching the design team work on this production. They really went all out with the backdrops! They even sourced antique wood all the way from France, and spent weeks perfecting the shade of oak and building everything from scratch. It’s been an incredible process seeing it all come together, honestly.

Last month, Jessie received an Oscar nomination for her leading role in Hamnet.

Having already won a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award this month, Jessie is nominated for an award again and will attend the ceremony in Los Angeles on March 15th. She was previously nominated four years ago for her work in The Lost Daughter.

The category of Actress in a Leading Role is expected to be very competitive, with Jessie facing off against Rose Byrne (for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).

Jessie expressed her immense pride and gratitude for being nominated for her performance as Agatha Shakespeare.

I was absolutely over the moon when I heard the news! Honestly, you can even hear my little one crying in the background while I’m talking, but it’s all worth it. I’m so incredibly proud and honored to be recognized alongside such amazing women, and especially thrilled to be able to share this with the whole ‘Hamnet’ team. It’s just a truly delightful moment.

Hamnet received eight award nominations, including the top prize of Best Picture and a Best Director nod for Chloe Zhao. However, many were surprised that Paul Mescal wasn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Jessie feels her success is equally due to her co-star, as she heavily relied on his contributions to deliver her performance.

When asked about him not being mentioned, she said she thought he was amazing in the movie. She feels like she’s found a lifelong partner working with him and described him as her everything.

‘His artistry is something that will continue to grow and be a theme in so many different ways.

As a lifestyle expert, I often see connections that truly define people, and this relationship is one of those. What Paul and Agnes built together is incredibly precious to me, and honestly, I believe they completed each other – Agnes wouldn’t be who she is without Paul in her life. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.

Everything in this story, from my contributions to everyone else’s, wouldn’t exist without Paul and his dedication to it.

‘So what is recognised belongs to him as much as him being recognised in his own category would.’

The biggest competition at the awards on March 15th will be between Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio, both nominated for the Best Actor prize.

Timothée, age 30, was nominated for his role in Marty Supreme, and Leo, 51, received a nomination for One Battle After Another. They will compete against Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).
