Amazon’s new Sherlock Holmes series has broken a record.
Guy Ritchie’s new show, Young Sherlock, tells the story of a young Sherlock Holmes (played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin) while he’s still in college. Before becoming the famous detective, he’s just a typical, somewhat reckless teenager at Oxford University. When a murder occurs, he becomes a suspect and must investigate to clear his name, leading him to uncover a massive worldwide conspiracy.
The trailer for Young Sherlock has become Prime Video’s most popular trailer ever, racking up 223 million views in its first week after being released on February 5th. According to Deadline, these numbers, tracked by Wavemetrix, are the highest for any show trailer on the streaming platform.
Okay, so I’m really excited because the trailer for this new thriller is blowing up. It’s already gotten more views than the first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power did (that one had 163.6 million views), and even beat out the season 2 trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty which had 151.8 million. That’s a really good sign!
It’s not surprising to see this record, considering how well-loved Sherlock Holmes is. Arthur Conan Doyle first created the character almost 139 years ago in A Study in Scarlet and its follow-up, both of which quickly became famous books.
The story of Sherlock Holmes became incredibly popular, leading to many TV shows and movies. Several famous actors have played him, including Jeremy Brett, Henry Cavill, Peter Cushing, and Basil Rathbone. More recently, Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of the quirky detective in the BBC series Sherlock was a huge success, lasting for four seasons.
Director Ritchie, who also oversaw the initial episodes and served as an executive producer, has a history with Sherlock Holmes stories. He previously directed Robert Downey Jr. in the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes and its sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Although a third movie has been considered, it hasn’t progressed beyond discussion for over ten years.
Even though Ritchie’s films aren’t directly part of the main series, his involvement has probably generated more interest in the Prime Video show, acting as a kind of backstory. Ritchie is a successful director, known for films like the live-action Aladdin, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. He’s also worked in television, directing episodes of Netflix’s The Gentleman (based on his 2019 film) and Paramount’s MobLand.
Even though Sir Arthur Conan Doyle passed away in July 1930, his famous character Sherlock Holmes continues to captivate audiences today through new stories and interpretations by other authors. Writers like Caleb Carr and Lyndsay Faye have contributed to this legacy, and Andrew Lane’s young adult novels, which feature a teenage Sherlock Holmes in the 1860s and 1870s, are a popular example. This series began in June 2010 and currently includes eight books, and it’s soon to be a television show on Prime Video.
The series stars Fiennes Tiffin, along with Dónal Finn, Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, and Colin Firth. Matthew Parkhill directs and serves as showrunner, and is joined by executive producers Dhana Rivera Gilbert, Marc Resteghini, Simon Maxwell, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Kelton, Colin Wilson, Harriet Creelman, and Steve Thompson.
The world of Sherlock Holmes remains popular, and lately, stories have started exploring characters beyond the famous detective. We’ve seen this with shows like CBS’s Watson and Sherlock & Daughter, as well as the Enola Holmes movies on Netflix. With a third Enola Holmes film coming out this year, and another new series on the way, it’s clear audiences are eager for new perspectives on the Sherlock Holmes universe.
Young Sherlock will be released on March 4, 2026.
