As tragic love stories go, it’s famously up there with Romeo and Juliet.
It seems Gen Z hasn’t noticed that ‘Wuthering Heights‘ doesn’t exactly have a cheerful conclusion.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m excited to share that a brand new film adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights hit theaters yesterday! It stars the incredibly talented Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as the iconic couple, Cathy and Heathcliff. If you’re a fan of classic literature or just a beautiful, sweeping romance, this is definitely one to check out.
Almost immediately after the credits finished, social media filled with posts – largely from young women – showing them crying with emotion.
The Daily Mail isn’t spoiling the movie’s plot, but it’s likely unnecessary anyway. The story is a classic, widely read in schools and adapted for film numerous times, so most people probably already know what happens.
Despite this, fans from Gen Z who have already seen the movie are advising others: ‘Make sure you know the story before watching Wuthering Heights.’
A girl filmed her friend crying during a movie and shared the video on TikTok. The caption explained that she’d expected a happy ending for ‘Wuthering Heights’ and was surprised to find it wasn’t a simple love story between Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
Someone else, visibly upset while speaking to the camera, stated: ‘It’s over, and I’m not sure how to adjust to normal life. It’s a really disappointing outcome, especially for those who weren’t aware of what was happening.’
The latest adaptation comes from British director Emerald Fennell, and her changes to the story have received mixed reviews from critics.
Okay, so everyone’s been so mean about the new movie! They’re saying it completely missed the point of the book, that it’s just a silly, empty romance and the original author would be horrified. Honestly, I think they’re just jealous! I thought it was perfectly romantic and dreamy, and I could totally get lost in the atmosphere. It just felt right, you know? I’m obsessed!
Before her film was released, Emerald Fennell, age 40, said she intentionally aimed to provoke a strong emotional response from viewers, and she openly admitted she was hoping people would react that way.
In an interview with Time Out, she jokingly said she hopes moviegoers will be very affectionate during the film – and that some might even need to be escorted out because they’ll be moved to tears.
I love movies that really make you feel something. When a film makes you scream, laugh, cry, or even just gasp, it means you’re truly connected to the story.
Emerald Fennell, the Oscar-winning director of Promising Young Woman, has cautioned readers of the original novel that her version is a reimagining, focusing on the more sensual and visually appealing elements. She describes it as stripping away much of the source material to highlight its ‘pretty and sexy bits’.
