Joshua Jackson has been seen in public again, marking his first appearance since the unexpected passing of his former Dawson’s Creek colleague, James Van Der Beek.
James Van Der Beek, age 48, died on Wednesday after a two-year fight with colon cancer. He is survived by his wife and their six children.
Joshua Jackson, best known for his role as Pacey on “Dawson’s Creek,” was seen leaving the popular restaurant Gigi’s in Santa Monica shortly after the sad news was announced.
The 47-year-old actor appeared worried and serious as he left the restaurant by himself, wearing a simple white cardigan and black pants.
People have observed that Jackson hasn’t posted anything on social media since Van Der Beek’s death, and hasn’t publicly acknowledged his former colleague.
The news deeply affected Hollywood, and many of Michael Dawson’s Creek’s co-stars, like Katie Holmes, shared touching messages online.
In a handwritten note shared on Instagram, actress Melissa Joan Hart—known for her role as Joey Potter—praised Alan Van Der Beek, highlighting his courage, kindness, generosity, and positive outlook on life.
She said she was deeply saddened by his passing, feeling both the pain of his absence and immense thankfulness for the impact he had on her life.
It’s been a tough time, and I’m still processing everything. I just wanted to share how incredibly grateful I am to have known James and been a part of his life, even in a small way. He was truly loved by so many, and I’m sending all my love to everyone who knew him.
Busy Philipps, known for her role as Audrey Liddell on Dawson’s Creek during the show’s later years, also shared a tribute on Instagram.
She expressed her deep sadness for everyone affected by the loss, recognizing the grief felt by his friends, family, and fans.
Philipps expressed deep sorrow for Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, and their six children. She described him as a truly exceptional and unforgettable person who will be greatly missed.
She expressed her gratitude for their long-lasting friendship, noting how close they were both while working together and in their personal lives.
So far, neither Jackson nor Michelle Williams, who was one of the show’s original stars playing Jen Lindley, has spoken publicly about the passing.
Jackson, however, has long held Van Der Beek in high esteem.
Before the second season of the show premiered in October 1998, Van Der Beek discussed with Teen People how the series had changed his life. Jackson also offered his perspective.
‘He’s the one everybody loves to love,’ Jackson said.
He then joked, ‘I don’t have to worry about throngs of girls. That’s more James’s thing.’
I remember when Williams talked about Van Der Beek – he said James had this classic, charming quality, like Cary Grant. It really stuck with me because it perfectly captured James’s charisma!
Other stars also reacted to Van Der Beek’s death.
Reese Witherspoon, who is also a producer on the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel Elle, shared that she was deeply saddened to hear about Van Der Beek’s passing, noting he had filmed a part in the movie.
He was truly an amazing and gifted person, and what always struck me was how kind and graceful he was in everything he did. My heart goes out to his family right now, and I’m sending all my prayers for them to find strength and peace during this incredibly hard time.
Following the family’s announcement on Wednesday, more stars joined in sharing condolences.
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of James David Van Der Beek this morning. He faced his final days with courage, faith, and grace, and had many thoughts to share about living a meaningful life and cherishing every moment.
I just… I know someday things will be okay, but right now it’s just… unbearable. All we need is to be left alone to mourn. He was everything – a wonderful husband, the most amazing father, a beloved son, a fantastic brother, and the best friend anyone could ask for. Please, just give us space to grieve.
Jennifer Garner, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lucy Hale, Christie Brinkley, and Rumer Willis all showed their support by liking the post.
A GoFundMe campaign was started on Wednesday to provide financial support for the Van Der Beek family, aiming to raise $500,000.
Kimberly Van Der Beek posted on Instagram that friends have set up a support link for her and her children as she and James go through a difficult time. She expressed both gratitude and sadness.
Your donation will help provide for the children’s basic needs, like housing and food, cover their bills, and fund their education.
Within an hour of the news, more than $100,000 had already been raised.
