Joe and Anthony Russo are clarifying their earlier description of the Avengers: Doomsday previews as “a story.” After releasing a fourth preview in January 2026—featuring Shuri, M’Baku, Namor, and The Thing—the Russo Brothers issued a statement that sparked a lot of fan discussion. On Instagram, they explained that the four previews weren’t typical teasers or trailers, but rather short stories containing hints about what’s to come, urging viewers to look closely. They used the hashtag #DoomsdayHasBegun.
In a recent interview with Empire magazine (reported by IGN), Joe Russo explained his comments about the trailers being connected to the main storyline. He stated that each trailer reveals important plot details and that, essentially, the events hinted at in the trailers are already unfolding for the audience. While some viewers thought these scenes were created solely for promotional purposes, Russo suggests they’re integrated into the film, allowing for individual character development and highlighting key moments. He described the movie as complex and emphasized that giving each character their own focus was a way to celebrate the story.
‘Doomsday’ Has Begun for the MCU, and It Will Never Be the Same

Ever since the Russo brothers made their initial comments, fans have been trying to figure out how the four Avengers: Doomsday trailers fit together. Now, with a live countdown clock added for Doomsday, many believe the story being hinted at is the beginning of the end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some think Doomsday isn’t just a title suggesting Doctor Doom will appear, but actually represents the end of the original MCU, with the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four uniting to face it. When the countdown ends, it might not just mark the movie’s release, but the end of the MCU as fans currently know it.
Joe Russo’s comment about wanting to “give characters their own space” suggests the movie’s trailers are focusing on its main characters. This likely means characters like Steve Rogers, Thor, the X-Men, Shuri, Namor, and the Fantastic Four will be more central to the plot than teams like the Thunderbolts, Shang-Chi, or Ant-Man. Russo specifically indicated Steve Rogers will have a prominent part, as he told Empire magazine:
We really connect with this character and believe he’s essential to the story. He maintains his important position within the group as the narrative progresses.
Bringing Chris Evans back as Captain America has upset some fans, who worry it undermines Sam Wilson’s role as the new hero and cheapens Steve Rogers’ perfect ending in Avengers: Endgame. Adding to the wait for new Marvel content, the studio skipped a Super Bowl ad for the first time in fifteen years, meaning it could be a while before we see trailers for Avengers: Doomsday or get a good look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. However, with four teaser trailers released, post-credit scenes from Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Ian McKellen accidentally letting slip details about a big action sequence, there’s still plenty for fans to discuss and speculate about.
