Fans eager to see Ethan Hawke‘s latest film will be happy to know it’s becoming more widely available soon.
Richard Linklater’s film Blue Moon, released in October 2025, features Ethan Hawke as composer Lorenz Hart. The movie depicts Hart looking back on his life on the premiere night of Oklahoma!, a musical by his longtime collaborator Richard Rodgers (played by Andrew Scott). Margaret Qualley and Bobby Cannavale also appear in the film, and many publications, including Collider and Elements of Madness, are calling Hawke’s performance the best of his career.
Netflix announced that the movie Blue Moon will start streaming on February 14th. While many new films are in theaters this Valentine’s Day weekend, viewers can also enjoy this highly-rated drama from the comfort of their homes. Blue Moon was previously available for rent or purchase digitally, but this marks its debut on a streaming service.
If you’re following the potential contenders for the 2026 Oscars, Blue Moon is worth seeing. It’s unusual in that it received only two nominations, but both were in significant categories: Ethan Hawke for Best Actor (his fifth nomination) and Robert Kaplow for Best Original Screenplay.
Richard Linklater’s latest film, Blue Moon, is receiving rave reviews and is considered by many to be one of Ethan Hawke’s best performances, boasting a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a review for ScreenRant, Rachel Labonte acknowledges the film isn’t perfect as a character study, but praises its insightful depiction of a key moment in the main character’s life. She particularly notes the ending has stayed with her, leading her to believe Linklater has created something truly special.
Although Blue Moon premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2025, it didn’t perform well in theaters, earning just $3 million globally. Despite this, the film received Academy recognition, and its recent release on Netflix could finally allow it to reach a wider audience. Ethan Hawke also appeared in the more popular films The Lowdown and Black Phone 2 in 2025, but viewers shouldn’t let those overshadow the quality of Blue Moon.
Wow, 2025 was a huge year for Linklater! Besides Blue Moon, he also put out Nouvelle Vague on Netflix. It seems like he spent the whole year exploring the stories behind famous works of art, and while critics mostly loved both films, they didn’t exactly become huge with audiences. But I’m really hoping Blue Moon will finally get the attention it deserves now that it’s streaming!
Blue Moon will be available to stream on Netflix on February 14, 2026.
