“Excellent” espionage drama with a “reluctant spy” and ‘vintage style’ lands new UK streaming home

The spy thriller The Ipcress File is now available on a new streaming service in the UK. Originally broadcast on ITV in 2022, the show is based on the 1962 novel by Len Deighton, which was also famously adapted into a film starring Michael Caine.

The story centers around Harry Palmer, an ex-smuggler who avoids military prison by agreeing to work as a spy during the Cold War. His first mission involves using his criminal connections to locate a disappeared nuclear scientist.

You can now watch all six episodes of the drama on Disney+.

Featuring Joe Cole, known for his role in Peaky Blinders, The Ipcress File has been well-received, with one IMDb user calling it “excellent.” Many viewers also appreciated the show’s vintage look and feel.

I’ve been seeing some people knock this show, comparing it to the original 1965 movie, but honestly, I think it’s really good on its own. I especially loved how they made it look like an old-school film – it was a cool vibe. Another gamer I was chatting with said it’s just a genuinely enjoyable show, and it definitely has that classic feel to it.

The show also stars Lucy Boynton, known from Bohemian Rhapsody, Tom Hollander of The White Lotus, and Joshua James, who appeared in Down Cemetery Road.

When the project first came out in 2022, Cole discussed taking over the lead role from Caine, describing it as a great chance to try something new.

He explained that he prefers to create his own interpretations rather than closely imitate Michael Caine’s earlier work.

The actor explained that after briefly looking at the source material – the book and one of the films – they decided they didn’t want to simply imitate the original. They wanted to bring their own unique interpretation to the role.

While watching the movie, I became concerned I might unconsciously start mimicking Michael Caine – he’s such a recognizable and charismatic actor, and his on-screen personality is so strong.

The Ipcress File is streaming now on Disney+ and ITVX.
